internet but how ?

he dudes i got my modem a wisecom isa 56 k
working in win98 and also in linux but i cant
get a internet connection in linux(suse 6.1)
i compiled the kernel and set the modem i can connect with kpp but then no isp conection i filled in the password and the othert stuff like in 98 any clues ?
by the way CD writing is awesome in linux
(scsi model) !! i can fool around with other
programs when i record direct from ide cdrom
to scsi writer !!(with xroast) thats realy nice .

Are you using LinuxConfig? I wasnt able yo get that to work. Try using KDE's 'kppp'.
I put the same info in that dialer prog and it worked fine.

I'm a little unclear on what you mean by "connection" is it that the modems do not handshake successfully, that you connect but your password is not accepted by your ISP, or that you connect to your ISP but cannot get your browser to a website?

it looks like i am connected now the counter of kpp is running then and my modem is locked
no error messages but netscape cant find the
pages and i cant get email but my acount is
up and running in debug menu i see that some
packets went out and some in so the connection is there but now the rest maybe i
forget to install something or the settings
in ect/ppp/options are not right ? can you email me your /ect/ppp/options so i can compare them also thanks for your reply !!!
i realy need this help windows has not to much secrets for me but linux has some

That file on my system is blank.
All my config for internet is done in kppp.

It has to be something in your connection from kppp, I would really go over that real well.

make sure that your DNS address is entered in "/etc resolve.conf" if you do then you will not need to enter anything in the DNS section of kppp.

If you want kppp to do this for you on a temporary basis while you are connected using it, edit the account and enter a DNS address.

though it sounds like you are establishing a ppp connection, do as Gentle Giant suggested and double check the kppp settings - under "Login Script" try "password" as a response (not where you put your actual password) somehow my connection seemed to happen faster once I entered that...maybe just my imagination..

Under "Device Line Termination" try "CR" only.

Under "Gateway" try "default gateway"

Of course under "Dial" it should probably be "PAP" but check with your ISP.

it is a good idea to check with your ISP anyway - for example, do you use a proxy and are the proxy settings entered into your Netscape?

Another point, though Netscape works just fine for me (Caldera Open Linux 2.2) the StarOffice 5.0 browser would not work unless I have several additional internal and web related modules installed and running as well... I suspect that there must also be a "bare minimum" of modules up and running in order to use Netscape to connect to the web... I have nearly everything installed and running...

i dont have a dns adres monster
the only things i have is a phonenumber and
the pop servers and login and password
in windows everything works great but not in linux
thats a shame !!

did you ask your ISP? . who do you use? maybe it is time to consider a change of ISP?

Don't you have to enter an address like "206.168.83.2" when using your dialup in Windows?

CMonster I know one locale ISP here doesn't have you enter DNS address - I didnt believe the guy I was setting up a computer for when he told me. Both are dynamic.

It sounds to me like your ISP uses dynamic DNS. I couldn't make that work either in Linux. Ask any body in your area whose ISP uses static DNS what they are using for DNS addresses and enter this in your setup just to try it. Ask your ISP if they supply DNS addresses for Mac users and try those. That's what I did. To verify the DNS problem try Ping commands to the DNS servers from a terminal window and see what you get. If you can get a response from them the problem is elsewhere.

i did it i contacted my ISP and they told me
that linux need DNS numbers and they gave them to me
now i can surf the world with linux !!!!
