Ok pacbell has really screwed me over with their appointments to come out and install my dsl line. I've made two appointments and both times the wait was on average about 4 weeks. four weeks after setting my appointment they've never showed up or call. getting ridiculous. so they said I could install it myself. huh? anyone know if this is a difficult procedure? or any1 know of any links so I can do it myself. pacbell is SUX but it's my only option if I want any decent gaming pings. Or does any1 know how to avoid packet loss on my 56k modem or prevent the high spikes. ping is ok, actually kinda good and low somtimes, but every couple of minutes the ping goes through the roof like from 180-240 range to like 500+ ping? any1 know why. thx http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I can't speak for your pac bell service but in my experience if you can tinkr with your computer you can install a xdsl connection. You are likely going to have to split your service and install a filter device so that the other phones in the house / apt don't get a lot of hiss & noise from your connection. They will give you a modem, splitter and possibly an ethernet card. Install the ethernet card and bind tcpip to it, set your ip address in the ip properties plug in the modem & away you go....

Obviously there is a little more to it than that but I don't think that you will find it all that complex.
As you are doing the installation yourself I hope that they are giving you a price break on the installation. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I had PacBell DSL. All they did was install a splitter on the line, and two jacks in the house in place of a single jack. One jack is for DSL, one is for voice. It didn't take them very long to do. Ask Pacbell to send you the modem/splitter/wiring kit and you should be able to do it. You need to be somewhat familiar with how phone wiring works though.

Yeah, pay attention to the wiring. I moved my splitter and problem ensued when I "crossconected" some of the wires. I was able to retrace my steps and now all is well http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Yeah when got my dsl they just sent me a package with a dsl modem, splitter(that i plug into an existing jack), filters for each jack in my house, a manual http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif, crossover cable, and a regular phone wire. A friend told me that they were supposed to come to my house to install the splitter box outside but i called and they said to use the splitter that was in the package. So i did connect the splitter to the jack in my room and the filters on all the rest of the jacks in the house and i was ready to install my software and configure my network for the dsl. Oh yeah and i have GTE ADSL. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Oh yeah and my connection is great. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
