Hi all,
Does anybody know how to optimise WIN 98 for gaming or in general??
I need to shut down programs that appear in the system tray, also.
If not, is there any web sites out there that would be able to help??
Thanks in advance

Hi mark30
Welcome to Sysopt!
There are several tweaks you can use to get things running smoother. The first thing is to get those startup apps removed. To do that, go to Start/Run and type MSCONFIG . The startup tab will allow you to remove items.
More shortly on other tweaks...

You could overclock, add more ram, defragment your hdd often, make your swap file static(same number for maxium and minium), and you could try this site.

Try Startup Cop. Get it on downloads.com or PC Mags website.
This program will allow you to do the same as msconfig but it has other cool features that gives you more controle of those bothersome startup apps.

Hi there, you could run "msconfig" from the Start Button >> Run. Navigate to "Startup", and uncheck the boxes with accordance to the programs which you don't wish to have in your system tray (or when you start up).
Make sure you know what a program does before you uncheck it. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Welcome to SysOpt!
Here's what I do, in addition to the other suggestions. I don't know what other programs you run in the background, so this may not work, and as the other member said, be careful.
Before I start a game, I press CTRL-ALT-DEL.
The Close Program Dialog box appears.
(*Do not press Enter, do not shut down, and do not select 'Explorer' or 'Systray', as Windows needs these two files to keep running.*)
I select each program one by one and click the 'End Task' button. Sometimes I have to do it several times. I have been doing this for several years with no problems, but maybe if you could give more info about what's running on your system, we could be more specific about what is safe to close.
(You can see everything that is currently running by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL and reading the list.)
Good gaming!
