not that much of an idiot - most people wouldn't expect to get shot by journalists....

One UK newspaper is reporting this morning that German special forces were involved (GSG-9) and used a gun hidden in a fake TV camera, disguised with stickers of the local TV station.
At the minimum, it destroys any trust that future hostage-takers have for journalists, who often have to act as intermediaries in such situations.

I suppose you're right - not everyone does suspect news crews. Personally, I read a lot of Tom Clancy and other authors like that so I know not to go out into the open if I was in his position. They are gonna have their most elite counter-terrorism team at the scene.
