I know there are a lot of quakers, half-lifers, unrealers etc. here. I'm one too. But, i couldn't help starting this thread after a pretty heated debate i had with a couple of friends.
We were talking about games we play to unwind after a long day. It slipped out that one of my all time favorites is MINESWEEPER. Everyone looked at me like i was a freak. My question is: What's wrong with that? I love that game. I just slouch into my chair and all i have to move is my wrist (very slightly) and my index and middle finger. I can get lost in that game for hours, and i always feel relaxed when i'm done.
Anyone else out there that still plays non-mainstream/non-oodles-of-money-making/costing games?
BTW, my best time on minesweeper at expert level is 105. Don't remember how i did it. Never ever came close to it after that.

I love Kyodai Mahjong. Great game, although now that it fully used directX, it doesn't quite fall under the non oodles of memory.

And second vote for DXball. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

A particular solitaire game called Tri-Peaks. It's VERY addicting, and I can play it when the 'puter is busy doing other stuff (like burning or uploading) because it's so small and lightweight (CPU-wise).

Whoa, I just looked at it's "about" box and it says Microsoft Entertainment Pack ©1991. Did we have computers back then?

I was going to offer to email it to whoever might want to give it a try, but no need because I found a place to play it online.

Here: Tri-Peaks (http://www.javalovers.com/tripeaks.htm)

(you're still welcome to email me if you desire a classic 1991 build of the game. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif)

Yeah, Mineweeper rules.

And of course, NiL, TuxRacer, TuxCart, and Chromium B.S.U. all rule also. But those are all Linux games (preinstalled with Mandrake 8, I'm not sure about other distro's), and some of them are a little bigger than Minesweeper.

Commander Keen ruled, too.

Commander Keen!
How cool was that game?
And what about "Sam the Salmon" on the Atari 2600? Swimming upstream to mate was never so much fun!
Actually I found California Games was a riot.

i'd have to say shadowgate for the NES...well maybe it's not lame, but by todays standards it sucks. but then again, that's only graphicall speaking. it's a little short, sure, but still the first time i played that game i'd say it was one of the best games ever made.

another thing, if it was really a lame game, would you like it? of course not!

I still play Gearheads every now & again. I had a demo on WFWG years ago and found a version at http://www.theunderdogs.org/
and put it on my sons pc. You have to beat all the levels each and every time to continue to the later more interesting levels which gets a bit tedious, if only it had a save game option.

All I can say is your guys need a proper game like Pirates!

Yes, the version that came on two 5.25" 360k specially formatted floppies.

I now have this game on a 400k .exe file that runs like a dream under win2000 on my P3-700Mhz laptop... 256meg RAM entirely optional http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

After that I'd have to vote for that online miniature gold game... SERIOUSLY addictive!

I've now bee playing Pirates! for about 15 years (I got it new in about 1985) and it still hasn't lost its charm!

laters all!!

Indy 500 for the Atari 2600. Those ice tracks were the bomb!!!

2 others i just thought of that I played on my Apple IIc:

Can't remember the name, it had a top down perspective and you controlled a robot/warrior that had a shield and battleaxe and got put on an island to fight another guy. You could get a disc and move at 3x speed. All the while trying to find some warp-away disc. Really lame, but a ton of fun!

And this multiplayer boat game. It had 2 spanish armada type ships with 8 cannons on each side and you would fight a friend. When you got hit you would take damage and lose cannons. It took time to reload the cannons, so you would fire and then try to bring around the other side of the boat to keep fighting. If you strayed off the map, you would become 'lost' and lose as well. Again, super lame, but a ton of fun!
