Sidewinder Force Feedback 2

I have just bought the above Joystick and can't get it to work.
The software installation stops near the end with an "illegal operation" message. I have also loaded the Via USB patch as I have a VIA chipset on my Asus A7V mobo.
I have 4 USB ports which are all enabled and working.
Although the software installation appears to stop near the end, the program still appears in "Add/Remove" programs along with the update patch. However, I cant calibrate or test the stick as I am unable to open " Gaming Options" in the control panel.
I have tried all the USB ports and uninstalled/re-installed (albeit with the same termination problems as above) the software but this doesn't work .
I have an Athlon 850mhz processor with 384mb SDRAM and running Windows 98.
Can anyone help-------------please!!!!!!!!!

If nothing works return it to the store where you bought it, Maybe a different force feedback stick like say from Logitech might work on your Comp intead. http://gamespot.com/gshw/filters/products/0,12844,437761,00.html
I plan on ditching my old Saitek 3d stick for a Force FeedBack model too, prolly go for The microsoft FF2 or the Logitech Wingman Strike Force.

Thanks for those links, your info was greatly appreciated. I tried everything but to no avail! As a last resort (and in desperation) I re-installed Windows 98 and tried again, hey presto it worked. I've tried it out in Combat Flight Simulator and its brilliant.
