the system:
500 celeron
80mb RAM
32mb S3 savage4 AGP
12x Toshiba cd-rom
Win98 SE
DX 7a
the problem:
the kid's game "Chicken Run" by Eidos
the video in this game is choppy, stuttering, slow moving. Not the actual gameplay, but the video movie at the beginning and the sections of video that play during the game.

WHY? this is a low level game,(200 pentium and 32mb RAM requirement) so the systems not being pushed. There are NO programs running in the background. We've got Nascar3, Nas Legends, DTR and others on there, and in all of them the intro movies, and any in-game movies, play fine.

Why is Chicken Run all choppy? Can't find nothing on their site about it.

What I do notice is that the CD drive seems to have trouble with the disc, like slow to read it, and really slow to install it. Did a full install, I would think that would put the video on the hard drive but maybe it's running from the CD and thats why its all choppy?
(I installed Demolition Racer, which is about the same size, in about 1/4 the time.)

Or maybe it's a windows thing, I just don't understand why everything's fine in every other game and chicken run sucks.

I'm not familiar with the software but a simple upgrade to DX8 might solve the problem. Remember a few years back when I got Total Annihilation and the intro movie was really choppy. I used to have DX5 which came off it's CD but when DX6 arrived the movie ran flawlessly. Hope it works http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Well if its an older game, I don't know if DX8 would help since the game probebly won't be optimized to take advantage of the new DX8 features, but its worth a shot though. You may have answered your own question as to why you have choppy video. It could be becuase the CD-ROM is having a hard time reading the CD. Many times, even when you do a full install, the cut scenes are still spooled from the CD-ROM. Try burning a copy of the game and using the burned copy. Just don't to on-the-fly copying becuase you'll get buffer underrun errors if the CD-ROM is having a hard time reading the CD.

If the video is being spooled off of the CD-ROM, then perhaps using a no-cd patch and copying the video to your hard drive would solve this problem.
