I am having a cable modem installed this weekend and I was planning on doing some online gaming. Mainly Unreal Tournament and Diablo II. I was wanting to know if there was any netiquette I should know of before I make a fool of myself or **** anybody off.

Well I don't know if your talking about "in-game" netiquette..

Don't go in a game your not welcomed in, for example if the game reads "HPB Only" Which means 'High Ping Bastages' Don't go in that game, because your going to be a LPB.

Another thing that gets me mad, is in Diablo II where I start a game called "Traders only" and a bunch of people just go in the game just to spam..

Mostly it's just common sense, and if you don't wanna **** people off, DON'T PLAY GAMES ONLINE because it's bound to happen, and if it does, just keep your cool and keep playing..

I rarely, if ever have problems with people on the Zone. It must be a "non-zone" thing http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Well I guess just treat people like you'd like to be treated and like you would if they were in front of you.

Also don't be afraid to take a stand or anything. Remember 97% of the people you meet in an online session you will never see again (this is especially true for Diablo II in my experience)

Now for a little opinion (This is d2 related as I play it online) Most of the people that play D2 are not very friendly. I remember back when Diablo 1 was the only game on b.net (going on what, 5 years ago now?) you could actually hold nice conversations with people while you slew hordes of demons. People were willing to help you out, not try to scam you for your stuff. After SC, BW, and D2 came along the quality of players has decreased with every new game. Remember that is my opinion and experience with b.net and don't be scared away by it I still enjoy b.net thouroughly but don't find it as friendly and personal as it used to be.

I don't know about D2 online. Ive only played it a couple of times.

But a couple hints on UT and other FPS games.
Many people will complain about camping (if you hide in a dark corner somewhere and snipe the whole game).
Definatly DO NOT spawn camp (wait by spawn locations, and frag ppl as soon as they respawn). This will make many enemies very quickly...

Ruahrc:
I'm not quite so sure about friendly people playing Diablo I online. I knew a lot of PK (Player Killer) and MK (Monster Killer) clans.. (Legit and hacked alike.)

Kruzin:
Good point, even when i play UT single player, and the bots camp it makes me mad!!

Yeah I know what you're talking about there was big problems with PK'ers and later on MK'ers (as techniques developed) but I was able to avoid this by simply talking to some people before I got into a game, (you could easily find the legits this way) and so after talking a little bit we'd get some co-op going, never had a problem. You can't do this anymore with D2, nobody talks to you unless you're in a guild or something.

I don't play UT so I can't really comment about it, but in counterstrike there are a lot of cheaters. I'm pretty sure UT and D2 has them too. But in CS, I use Punkbuster and play mostly on punkbuster only servers. At those servers I am confident that those players are there to have good clean fun.
