Ultimate encoder (shareware, some functionality limited) works well for CD ripping and MP3 encoding. Also, you can use Real Jukebox (personally, I h8 Real Player).

You can usually get 10:1 compression with MP3 and the sound quality is good, so a full CD will occupy 60-70MB.

If you have trouble finding Ultimate Encoder, I can email it (3.4MB).

Stu: Download a program called MusicMatch Jukebox, http://www.musicmatch.com
It is the ultimate, it ripps, encodes, organizes playlists, and many other things that are useful. It includes a comprehensive help file and is by far one of the most popular pieces of software available for free download off the net.

I use it to compress (encode) my WAV files and other sound files into MP3 format, which as was said above is a lot less compact. Try the software, I've been using it for over a year now, and Have never had a problem with it. It works great with a CD-R/RW drive also.
