9 bucks at Costco! Anyways I heard a few of you ranting about this game, so I hadda go buy it myself expecially at this great price. It was also buy one get one mail in free (choose another game, out of like 5 other great games, including Nox, Red Alert w/ Aftermath, and Alpha Centauri). Maybe this should be in steals and deals...but anyways....
I go an install it in Win2k, and it slaps me with a "Not in NT" msg. I know you can install it someway. However all the links i googled give a different way of doing it, and none seem to work for me.
I have Win2k SP2, and DX 8.0a. If i try using 95 compatability layer, setup just errors on me.
I also have ME on another partition, so I can install it from ME if i need to and hack it from there.
Can anyone give me exact instructions of how they did it?
BTW Ive been playing it in WinME. Graphics are spectacular. When I bought it, I was thinking "this isnt gunna be any Gran Turismo 2". I'd put it up there with it now that I've played it..If only they had 500+ cars too http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif. I dont like how when they say buy a car in the beginning, they really mean 'Pick one of these two'. Also I was lagging like crazy until I discovered my GTS was running software mode. Flicked on D3D, and I think I've seen some of the best graphics in any racing game ever.
Anyways back to the point. How do I install and run in Win2k? I want personal experience, because I really want this to work.

Here ya' go:

This technique works for me with no real problems to note, just that you have to be connected to the net to start the game initially.

This was one of the methods
When i doubleclick the shortcut to autorun.exe in compatability mode, it asks me for the language, and then after i select english, it says Setup.exe has caused errors and will be closed.
Maybe Im doing something wrong...
Actually If i try it now without compatability mode, it still gives me that error. the first couple times I tryed to install it, it just said you must be on Win 95/98. Maybe my Windows installer went corrupt on me.

...didn't you just download a patch?
Should work, shouldn't it? I don't have Win2k - YET http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
From the most recent update, 4/01:
installs and plays fine. Still does not play Glide, but that is the only problem. Running on Beta 2 2462a

that update is for WinXP.
For Win2k it says "Download patch 3"
Which I did, and im following the instructions within, but I cant even install it let along apply the patch.
I think my installer messed up..just for NFS4...I think I'm going to have to wait for next format of my Win2k. OS swapping isnt that big of a deal, but its something I can live without...if not for NFS4.

I just formatted, and the install stopped crashing. So far so good. I followed the instructions down to the tee, and just when I get to run it, I keep getting a "Need for Speed files are corrupted, please re-install".
The only descreptancies are:
1) I have Win2K SP2 (he said SP1, dont think its a problem)
2) I have DirectX 8.0a (He says 8.01a, which I don't think exists)
3) I'm installing the full install as opposed to typical or minimum (the txt file didnt specify)
4) I installed to "F:\Need for Speed High Stakes" as opposed to the default directory, which he also doesn't mentium. F:\ is my games drive.
I am also online as you said, although I don't see why it matters.
Rob..is there something else I'm missing?

I just followed the directions as indicated within the patch's text file, worked fine for my box. Everything the same as yours, except I installed with only SP1.
However, I did have a friend that simply could not run the game by using the patch. We applied the patch, then manually copied each of the CD's directories to the corresponding directories on the hard disk. Then edited the startup *.ini to change the install and run paths to the hard drive. However, for this much headache, I would recommend just dual booting Win9x to resolve the issue.
Good Luck,

Still can't do it
I think it may have something to do with SP2..Thats the only thing that is different from my configuration from any others.
I guess I can wait til "NFS6:Will work with Win2k" or XP comes out and I get it, which will hopefully be compatable with all this, or the nextr compatability Win2k patch comes out, which will hopefully include Win2k. This is the first non DOS game I have unsucessfully ran on Win2K. I have my ME/2K dualboot set up, but I dont like the feeling of dropping everything to play NFS4. Maybe once in a while though for the thrill of driving really fast. Thanks for the collective effort.
-- EDIT
NFS: Porsche Unleashed for $15 at best buy..I figure this one might be more Win2k Friendly.
Whew...installing was a breeze on my system..Didnt even have to use Win95 compatability. Havent actually tryed to play it yet, but I did create a character just to make sure I could load up the game.
I really wanted to drive it up in a Diablo, But I guess I'll settle for Porsches.
