Most of you will just give a knee-jerk reply that win2k is more stable period and that winME sucks.
I run winME on 3 machines here at home and win2k server on one. I don't use it as a server, its a peer to peer LAN connected to the internet through a router and cable modem.
I was just wondering if anyone has actually compared the stability of games (specifically UT) on the two operating systems?

The only thing that bothers me with win2k is that any game using the half life engine stalls after 5min and I have to reboot. Other then that its all good.

W2K is good, although it isn't as compatible as WinME (keep that in mind). Win98 and Win98se work just fine for me. They say NT is good, but I have never tried. Linux would be nice, but NOTHING of games works on it now...

UT will crash on both my ME and 2000 pro the main difference I find is MOST times 2000 can recover without a reboot, but a reboot generally is better because its flushes the ram etc.
Both pretty stable on my 2 oclocked machines Cel@850, Duron @880, I have dual boot on each http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I use both WinME and Win2K, and I have no problems with games including HL, CS, UT, Q3A, SS, AOE2, Diablo2, etc.

Small problems with either one though.
Win2K has a problem when it exits Starcraft, it lingers in the taskbar and refuses to close, even on shutdown/restart/log off. Im forced to hit the reset button. I dont know if this problem applies to just me.

Also, System Shock 2 wont install normally on Win2K (you have to trick the OS).

And lastly, DOS games such as Duke3D, Doom, Doom2, and Raptor:COTS (Remember those games? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif) dont work in Win2K.

And WinME crashes on CS serving and playing sometimes. Win2K NEVER does that.

It all comes back to the fact that Win2K is more stable, but WinME is more compatable. If your asking stability, then the OS that is more stable will win for stability in games as well.
If your asking compatability, then WinME.

The compatability is only with a few games (I have 30+ games, and the only ones ive had problems in Win2K with are the ones listed). For the games I play, I will pick Win2K over WinME anyday.
If it works in Win2k in the first place, then you should use Win2k for it. If it doest work in Win2k, then obviously you shouldnt be using Win2k.
It comes down to which games you want to play with it.

I've run a few servers on WinNT Server 4.0, with only service pak 3, without any problems. Running a pentium 233 with only 64mbs of ram. I think I've managed to kill it maybe twice. Other than those two occurences, NT 4.0 Server has served me pretty well. Of course, if you get a port to Linux, go with that, I've yet to kill any game servers I've run on linux. Quake variants, and half life variants. I've not tried Unreal Tournament yet though, I'll check and see if I can find a linux port for it and let you know how it went.
