After seeing a post of mine locked (name a brand name you hate and why), and then seeing a post that questioned the lock up disappear, I have come to believe that it is a waste of my time to contribute to this forum. It wasn't enough for the moderators to lock the thread, but they seemed to me to be insultive as well. If their excuse for locking it out was to prevent us from lawsuit concerning slander, then why was the whole post not deleted like the one questioning it apparently was? Maybe I'm wrong....but I won't support this kind of censorship if I'm not; I imagine this post will be removed eventually, but until then, please post any good message boards that you may know of. I still participate at; http://www.3dfxgamers.com/boards.asp . 3dfx is not the only thing discussed there, and the moderators seem to use good judgement most of the time there. Not perfect.... but....

You think that we are going to give you links to message boards when you're going to leave Sysopt?? Whatever....

I have come to believe that it is a waste of my time to contribute to this forum. It wasn't enough for the moderators to lock the thread, but they seemed to me to be insultive as well. Well, I can tell you where NOT to go: Anand tech. You think you've taken some abuse from admin? This is Disneyland compared to that place.

madthumbs
05-29-2000, 05:30 PM
I don't really feal too abused. I never had much respect for insultive people, they are usually just covering their deep down sense of inferiority. I like message boards and would like to participate in some good ones, but not ones that will be a waste of my time, or overly controlled.

Warthog;
I try to be a helpful person when I can. It is your loss if such people as you choose not to direct me to other message boards that you may use. Loyalty can be a human vulnerability. Why should I waste any more time here?

No, I think anandtech is just where he will fit in. Maybe sysopt is just not where he belongs. From my view, sysopt is mainly about helping people with computer hardware problems and learning how to get the most out of your rig.

And who are we to question the admin? Its there site, not ours. They can tailor it to any criteria they want. Don't worry, there are plenty of people who will hang around.

Nah chip, Anand is a little less tactful when it comes to something they don't like.
They don't like your post. They ban you.
They don't like your looks. They ban you.
Their dog died. They ban you.
(Yeah yeah I'm sore cuz I got banned http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif)

Oh yeah and you can forget it if you're an AOL user. (because guess what they did to all AOL users?)(here's a hint: it rhymes with "can")

On the other hand, arstechnica.com is a lot more lenient w/ material in posts. They don't exactly have the good family feel of this board though. Seems targeted to a mature audience. Err let me rephrase that: a broad audience. Some of the posts are pretty immature.

I suggested anandtech cause they have a off topic forum that gets the most traffic of any forum I have ever seen. If he wants to post off topic things, thats where he can do it.

Questioning administration? I'm moving on... I'm not putting up a fuss, I'm not flaming, I'm not insulting. I'm simply letting a fine group of people know that I don't plan on participating here, and asking people to share any insights they have before I'm totally done. I'm not out to pull anyone away from here, just stating why I'm leaving so soon. Before you know it, I'll be gone. Sure the administration can be as insultive and censoring as they want, I can also move on, so whats the problem? Thanks again hd581, your one of the types of people that attracted me to this site to begin with.

Ok, I just checked out Anand tech. The icon for each member idea is kinda stupid. The members definately are more......brash than we are.

Matt, are you sure you are sure that you're fed up with this board? This will get locked if it starts to turn into a pitty party...

If you truly feel how you act then you should discuss this in private via email with sysopt. Here is the address
sdw@sysopt.com

How is it you have been a member a whole 19 days and you've become such an expert on this site and how its to be ran?

Maybe you should take your advice and find a site more suited to your needs.

Just a tiny bit of input,

I have been a member here for quite a while although you may think differently because I am still just a member. But in any case here is my 2 cents, I like this board because of the quality it has and the family feel that I get when I visit. Its reputation is unparalleled. Call it what you want, say what you have to say but when the smoke finally clears and you have had time to look back, I believe you will see things in a different perspective. Check the other boards, I have memberships there too but I keep coming back here for the QUALITY. I don't hold it against you for feeling the way you do but I do feel it's a bit extreme to feel that way in such a short period of time. Anyway, got some reading to do.

Well, I certainly don't encourage any hasty decision making, and would suggest you don't burn any bridges. But in an attempt to be helpful, here are a few of the boards I visit (or used to visit) on a regular basis...(I really don't have the time anymore):

Ace's Hardware has a good board, sometimes a little "techy" but that's ok:
http://www.aceshardware.com/board/general/

Tweak 3D has a pretty good board (although they also use those goofy icons):
http://tweak3d.pcstats.com/index.cfm?NoCookies=Yes

RivaZone is an old hangout of mine:
http://www.rivazone.com/discussion/rpgboard/general/

Bj?rn's 3D World is another old hangout of mine (good people there). As far as being friendly, helpful, and a "family-like" atmosphere Bj?rn's runs a close second to SysOpt:
http://www.bjorn3d.com/cgi-bin/forum/Ultimate.cgi

Here's another one you might enjoy (if you run an AMD system): http://www.3dnow.net/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi
I got into a heated debate with a few members about a year ago and ended up leaving in a huff. And due to my pigheadedness and stubbornesss I'm sure I won't return...but it's good board if you can get along with the people. At lot of younger people there, but very intelligent (MOST of 'em anyways).

I do agree that admin can be absurd sometimes, but that is no reason to leave. I made a lot of good friends here, and is because of them that I keep coming back.
Also, I do agree with voicing out opinions about bad companies... like HP and compaq. Man!!!! What a rip off that was buying from them. (won't go on, or my reply my get cancel!)
Anyhow, I still think that sysopt will remain to be the best board around.
Btw: Socalgirl Rulez!

I find the people here in general very helpful, and I was very happy with this board and would have been content here if not for the administration overstepping what they had to do by insulting the people who posted in the string. I'm not getting even with them, it's their board. I feel I'm being wise by looking for a board that would more suit my taste. I won't write a personal letter, It hardly has an effect in a situation like this. I have nothing to discuss with them either. Its bad enough that users will get insultive to each other, but we don't need administers insulting users. This should be my last post here. I may come back to browse here, but just as an observer, and not nearly as often. There is no reason for people to be upset with me for leaving. I don't feel welcome here, and am doing the right thing. Thanks for all the help!

All of these boards are very friendly and some of the members here frequent the first two.
ehelp is a bit strict and they will not tolerate many of the posts that go on here. The admids here really arn't bad but I do imagine they get frustrated at times, I know I do and I will let someone know about it sometimes. I have become very frustrated with all the whinning that has gone on latly! If people are not happy then they should not be here, if they do not agree with the rules then they should not be here,etc..

No matter what anyone has to say, I don't believe that Sysopt's and crew could be any more lenient than they already are!!! They have to endure alot of childish and egotistical attitudes to keep the ball rolling around here. They're striving for noble goal ...to be the best BBS on the net. But some of the members think that this board is here just for them. BUT IT"S NOT!! It's for everyone who wants to paticipate , not frustrate the members and the Admin. Like I've said, we've all made dumb and obnoxious
posts, me included. But you have to draw the line..Are you contributing or just a pain in the *****. You can be both within limitations. But give us all a break and do your soulsearching after you hit the Shutdown button, then come back and have some fun!!!!

How ironic your handle is "blind to truth". http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Seriously, from the gamers view, AOL offers a pretty bad ping and packet loss. IOW, it's hard to log on to remote servers and play because of the severe lag.

Ok....this is from madthumbs closed thread http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif.

Reasons why I hate aol:
*slow
*stupid
*who needs an "online community"
*for beginning computer people
*slow
*I hate net restrictions
*sucks for gaming
*won't connect to gaming zone
*it's a rip off
*sends too many free trial cds
*I have a lifetime supply of free aol which I don't want
*build their service around chat rooms
*"supports" spamming
*often cannot connect
*no way you can use 500 hours in 1 month unless it is online 17 hours each day
*the "community" is worthless
*too few servers to handle members
*part time dating service (chats)
*did I mention it's slow?

Visit www.aolsucks.com (http://www.aolsucks.com) to find out more.

I think you are uninformed http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif.

My brother Pickel, and Warthog have got it right. Another way to say it=>> "This is Sysop's board, love it or get lost." The good folks who put up with this meaningless drivel that seems to be more and more prevalent are much more tolerant than I would be. Hey Guys! Lets take up a collection for some "Pampers" a bib, something to put in the little mouth and a big box of crying towels, boo hoo, boo hoo, GET A LIFE, GROW UP OR GET OUT!

To me this barrage of returning insults, such as "boo hoo, boo hoo, GET A LIFE, GROW UP OR GET OUT!", is even more childish than the initial whining. If someone's gonna ***** and moan as they're leaving...then just let'em leave. Do you have to kick them in the **** on the way out the door? That's real mature.

From reading thru the lines here, I feel that it is not the intentions of anyone for Madthumbs to leave. I believe Syopt's and all of us value all our members, just wanna have a kind of " peace in the valley" I don't want the guy to go, hell , he's only been here a couple of weeks and obviuosly we all have a few crossed wires somewhere. Madthumbs, let's just leave all this and begin again. I'm sure we can all help one another and be able share
many things in the future. What do you say?????????????

http://arstechnica.infopop.net/OpenTopic/page?a=cfrm has a pretty great forum,so does http://64.27.77.160/cgi-bin/ubb/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro

They are both sites owned by people, and not large companys..............so I think you will find those forums to be a bit more relaxed...................do not go to anands if you think this is bad here.

I personally think the biggest problem here is the lack of an off topic forum...................yea I know what this site is all about, but there are so many people here that just want to talk about whatever,so they post it in general discussion...............and it gets deleted if someone in charge just happens to not agree with it,or does not see any point to it.

Maybe they should get rid of general discussion all together huh? I think it is just too, well general.......I mean every time I make a post there I am worried about stuff like "I wonder if sysopt is having a bad day"....and "hmm is this what they think is an appropriate off topic post".........."should I not even post this"............with the larger this BBS gets, there will become a greater need for an off topic section here........or this place will become more and more a mad house whether sysopt likes it or not.

I think it is great that sysopt does not have an off topic forum. Because it helps keep the overall goal of this site, which is system optimization, in the forefront. The way I look at most threads that I start or post in around here (not that it matters, I know im not admin http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif ) is I ask myself "will this help someone understand computers more?"
I dont need to give examples of threads that dont fit that mold, we have seen plenty of those lately. Even the famed Hampster thread (may it rest in peace) had a computerish slant to it. This site is a more mature site than other message boards out there and as such it is held at higher standards than others...and I am glad because of that http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I very much like SysOpt, it is kept clean (not cluttered by sigs, not needed icons, etc.) and to the point (pc stuff, most of the time). When I have a pc question I only go to this forum and/or appropriate efnet chans.

However I more and more see, people flood post to beef up their rating. I figure admins are too nice or simply have lives and not enough time to deal with this.

Other than that, they do a good job.
