Well i've had trouble with Win2k, and Winme with games (Quake3, Diablo II come to mind quickly..)

Right now i am running Win98 2nd edition and everything seems to work fine for me http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

If your system is going to be primarily a game system, I would say to go with Win9x for best gamme compatibility. Win2K isn't compatible with all games as you may know....

I have found a nice deal on a new PC. I want to be sure and have the right OS for games. I thought I would partition, so tell me which one is the best for games and which graphics card would you suggest? I can't afford the most expensive, but I want the best card for the least money. Doesn't everyone?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Win98SE here, too.

For the videocard, depending on the rest of the computer, GeForce256 DDR/GeForce2 MX or GeForce2 GTS.

Thanks a million!!
I didn't expect so much help. Looks like I will do ok. I will use Win98 SE, and the video card is Nvidia GeForce-2GTS 32MB DDR AGP.
I can hardly wait.
Thanks again.
Yeah, why didn't someone say Linux? LOL

hahaha.. linux.. hahaha
don't get me wrong, I'm planning on getting a computer and making it a linux box, but until then, i don't want to be limited to a total of 4 games (heheh j/k http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif)

and win2k has it's own problems... go to a site like www.firingsquad.com (http://www.firingsquad.com) and look through some of their old articles adressing this exact issue. I believe that they do a more than sufficient job of showing when win98se is the best option...

Best OS for games: DOS hands down.

I would have to say Windows 98 SE offers faster performance for most games, but Windows 2000 is also starting to get develop into a gaming platform as well. But offers slower performance than Windows 98 SE, but is slowly improving its performance.

"Help" is Sysopt's middle name.

No, it's "optimization". <IMG SRC="http://server2044.virtualave.net/r0nald/ubb/biggrin.gif" border=0>

Windows 98 is probably the best as there are still some issues with window 2000 and some games and various hardware setups and configurations. However I have just read that Microsoft have decided to make Windows 2000 more of a gamming os than it currently is. Expect fixes for this in the Windows 2000 service pack 2 (whenever this comes out).
