Quake3 instead of Quake2

For me, it's simple. I've played all of the other games and they sure are pretty, but none of them has Q2's CHARM. The game is just so damned quirky and JUST good looking enough to have kept me for 3 and a half years or so. I STILL play those same 8 maps and I still play at least an hour a day, usually more like 4 and I'm STILL not bored. Q3 is too slick. I don't like the ammo packs, they're generic, the sounds are too...I don't know...they're too much like Mortal Kombat or something.

That's my 2 cents worth.

I think that daffy came close to hitting the nail on the head. As impressive as most of the aspects of quake3 are, it's just way to much like an arcade game. It's just not what I want to play while sitting in front of my computer

All experienced q2 & q3 players that i know have gone back to q2 for a short time, but always come back to q3. Among many other things q3 offers much better control, its like comparing a jeep to a humvee.

Wrong they are NOT parts of the game. They are part of the competitive trash talking kid-culture that permeates any game that is predominately populated by kids. Period. Even some of the WWF generation of adults jump into it, because they've fallen prey to the idea that THIS is the game.

Come on by some of the servers we play on some time. See if you don't get the game of yer life, at the same time, see how many times someone had to say "OWNED" to give you the game of your life.

There was a very wise man who said:
"The young sharpen their teeth on the bones of their elders." This was directed at why kids lash out at their parents. It also goes a long way toward explaining why adolsecents in GENERAL(not all, but most) like to puff out their little chests and stiffen up their hind legs and talk trash. They're sharpening their teeth and trying to come to grips with what it is to be a man. The irony is, you'll find that the older crowd, the folx that are putting meat on the table and taking care of business on a daily basis, to put it plainly, the MEN, don't need to talk SMACK when they play. They let their skillz say volumes because they've learned something very important about games, and life in general. Talk is cheap, and trash talking is the cheapest talk of all. A true player doesn't need to put someone else down, not even in jest, to lift himself up. A true player loves the game too much to pollute it with ego jabs and moronic trash-talking.

It's when the bull$h*t ends...that the game begins. Like I said, to those of you who used to talk smack in my beautiful game...thanks for moving on to Q3, I am truly grateful. I wish you the best.

I didn't like Q3 much when it came out. Some of the maps were just ridiculous. It WAS way too cartoonish, and the railgun in Q3 completely sucks compared to the old school version. But with CS taking up so much of my gaming time, I'm going to have to say that it rocks just about anything else online.

I don't quite understand the "cartoonish" replies. I am quessing you might be refering to the characters and/or enviroments? What some might call "cartoonish" others might call imaginative and immerssive.

Quake2 is a lot better than Quake3, Quake2 has just got a betta feelin' when u actually kill some1, well, that's me! In Quake3 it seems a bit more dull probably because of the more cartoon graphics. To all detractors of q3 i say you do not know what this game is capable of. I have been playing it for over a year and it is still my first choice when i sit down to game. There is a rythmic flow one can acheive while strafe jumping in q3 that cannot be found in any other fps, it requires a honed skill to attain.

I would make a demo to give you some clue but i don't think my efforts would be appreciated.

That's precisely what I would have told you a year ago before you moved on to Q3. You don't know what Quake2 is capable of. You STILL don't. Not a clue, most of you don't. To tell you the truth, although that's a shame, it's your loss, not mine. I've PLAYED Q3, and when I played it, I HAD a knowledge of that "rythmic flow" when I played it(hell I learned it in Q2), I was bunnyhopping and strafe jumping like a madman from the moment I got in the game. It was a really easy transition, because in many respects its exactly the same game with a make-over. However there were things missing. Jumps that didn't pop off anymore like they used to. A sort of FORCED reality to the physics that I didn't like in some way and YES most definitely a slick, sterile ARCADE-LIKE Saturday morning Mighty Morphin Power Rangers quality to it that was NOT to my liking. You have EVERY right to prefer this game, to enjoy that look and feel, but for gawd sake DON'T lecture me on what I DON'T know about Quake3 or what I wouldn't appreciate. I've been telling folx like you for years the same thing about Quake2, but let's face it, you didn't take the time then, and if they had come out with a Quake 4 already, you wouldn't have taken the time with Quake3, you would have moved on instead, period. You jumped into the game for the graphics and because it was the latest thing, and THEN you discovered what made us fall in love with Quake2! Your big mistake is attempting to ATTRIBUTE that to Quake3. Quake2 had it long before Quake3, you just never took the time to notice.

Sounds like you are QUITE impressed with the graphics in Q3 to me. In fact you seem to find that they help you to IMMERSE yourself in the game! What did I ASSUME again?

Oh and by the way, picmip" is a value which sets the dimensions of textures. Setting it above 0 can improve performance on slower systems. A value of 5 removes them altogether.

In QUAKE2 use gl_picmip to shrink textures by (2 to the X power) where X is the value of gl_picmip.

ANYTHING ELSE you'd like to add? Or would you like to keep going? I respect your love of your game, but I can sit here and shut you down all day if yer planning on trying to FLAME me or any of the other Q2 players who have voiced THEIR opinions on this topic.

I have many video configs, when i play competitive online scrims i use "ugly settings". When exploring new custom map/models i like to see all that is q3.

q3a is a lot closer in the fast paced action to q1 (for those of u who have even played it)

I do have Q3 but every1 is right how it just doesn't have the right attractiveness to it that Q2 did. I don't like the small arena's in QuakeIII. I also don't like that it's made for only multiplayer (ok you can play it with AI's as well). And the engine looks too smooth (sounds really weird).
