Has ICQ gotten any better? When I joined a couple of years ago it kindof sucked, and I stopped using it. A friend of mine (read as village idiot) swears up and down that it is much better now. I almost believe him. I have thinking about installing it again. I have saved my old ICQ folder, is there an easy way to restore my contacts i.e. transfer prog. (assuming they still are on ICQ).
BTW How high have the ICQ numbers gotten? I thought mine was high at 1124960.
Thanks for the info,
Banti

Sorry Alan but I've had it for 3 years and am running version 99a without a hitch. Sometimes it wont connect(green flower) right away when called up, but messages fine, does file transfers, chats, address book, etc., and still has a WAY larger member base than AOL IM. There's nothing really "innovative" in ICQ today, but alot of bugs have been patched.
We use it at work, and its great. We've got file transfers of 80-90k using cable modem and T-1. Transferred whole CD-Roms in 20 -25 mins.

I too am using 99b, and I think it is pretty cool! My number is 11 million, If you have your old # you should be able to just tap into that! That's what I did after being offline for about a year!

I've also been using ICQ now for quite some time--probably not too long after it was first released. I've never had any major problems with it and 99a runs great. I mean, for a program that does as much as ICQ does, yeah it has it's occasional fault...but overall I'd say it's a great little proggy! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
I'd also have to agree that you can't go wrong with ICQ. It definitely has it's little faults, but what can you expect from a free program like that? I'm using 99a and aside from the odd connection problem (more a fault of my ISP than ICQ) and the occasional time when it refuses to send a message, it's been great. My number is in the 8 million range... which is considered low nowadays...

Drizzle-got you beat by a few thousand...
Do you guys use icq with a dial up. I am wrestling with barely 36.6k on my 56k, and I do not want to clog my bandwidth too much. I would use it at work, but last I checked there is no HP-UX 10.20 port, and my comp, has a wicked firewall.

I've been using it since 1.02, then 1.110, then 98a, 98b, 99a, 99b. My UIN is in the 1 million range. A few of my friends even have 6 digits UIN's.
Over the years, I've never lost my contact list... Which is why my message archive file is around 30 megs... and is ultimately the cause for why it takes easily about 20-30 seconds to load on my p2-450 w/ 128 megs of ram.
I use it a lot. My friends at UCLA send me enormous files which I can download at 100kb/s and up. The ICQ-email function builtin is genius. I can use it to check my messages from multiple servers quickly and easy by hitting ctrl shift c. It's easier for me to do that, than open up Outlook 98.

I like version 99a better than 99b. I have very few complaints with it. Yeah it is slow to connect at times, and will disconnect you for no reason at times, but for being a free proggy I can't complain to much. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
I've been using it since shortly after it was released. I'm in the 700,000 range. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

i've been using it for a while now (UIN 6471072) and have never ever had a problem with it. actually, when AOL came out with the IM i resisted using that for the longest time. i've been using powwow ( http://www.tribal.com ) for a few years as well. ICQ has come a long way as far as patching security vulnerabilities but even 99a has two that i've run across, but that's only if your hosting a server.

ehehhe you don't need a port scanner, regardless of whether or not they are hiding their IP. have the other person send you a file (pictures are good, they're a decent size) and during the file transfer open a DOS prompt and run a netstat and you can pull up their IP as well as sending/receiving ports.
not that i'd do anything like that, of course. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Just think 62,000,000 users publishing their IP each day.
Hackers paradise!
Now where did I put that port scanner? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
Hello,
with so many users I can't complain. Sometimes the connection with Croatia is bad, but with N.Zeland it's always fine.

I've been using 99b since it came out and I've always been pleased (I wouldn't use anything else) with it with one or two exceptions. When i try to send a message in chat if I exceed 450 characters it says that it can't be sent because either the recipient is using an older version or they are off-line, neither of which are the case. Also, if I try to minimize the ICQ window when it's open on top of another active window the radio button goes in but it does nothing. After several seconds it pops out and it will minimize. Anybody else had these or similar probs? These are not major problems just extremely aggrivating. I contacted tech and I couldn't believe the childishly worthless responses I recieved.

Ive used ICQ every day of my life. Picked it over AIM about 3 years ago, and still do. ICQ has just enought security, and you have the freedom to not talk to anyone you dont want to with just a couple clicks to never hear from them again. Theres status for everything, and even checks email in the background for you and grabs the headers and first 99 lines so you can read em before gettin em.
Very useful app..dunno where id be without it.
BTW it skinable w/ ICQ plus too http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
The guys over at Mirabilis had the ICQ 2000 beta up for about a week, but its down now. I heard some complaints about it, so i downloaded it and didnt install it.
Im happy with ICQ right now (best app on my comp no doubt)..and if its not broke dont fix it right?
I have a 56k Connection @ 48k, and have ZoneAlarm on medium, and can use it fully. If i want to chat or File transfer, i have to shut down the firewall to initiate em, then I can turn it back on.
I have a 56k and the only time i ever have any complaints about bandwidth is when a LPB whups in in a game or when im Napstering...
Otherwise im fully content with my 56k.

2 years here with ICQ and no problems at all
great downloads depend on the slowest person sending or receiving a file.... if the slow one is a 56K modem then you will be restricted to that speed.... but such is life...

Hey AuraEdge, I got my ZoneAlarm on full stealth and ICQ 99a works just fine once you give it permission, so you should be ok.

Hey People,
I have a solution for your connection problems.. Instead of using the default icq
server( which is icq.mirabilis.com) use another they have 10 or so... Such as
icq1.mirabilis.com
icq2.mirabilis.com
icq3.mirabilis.com
icq4.mirabilis.com
icq5.mirabilis.com
icq6.mirabilis.com
icq7.mirabilis.com
icq8.mirabilis.com
Then check the box that says something about use last connected server
P.S ICQ# 262216
Hope this helps

I've been on ICQ for about a year with the number 50864***. Actually that is my 2nd number since starting (another story).
I like the program but the security aspect is a bit scarey. I've recently installed 2 different firewalls on 2 diff computers. The Zone Alarm is a bit tricky on ICQ. Adding icq.mirabilis.com to allowed computers seems to work but I'm not sure if I like that idea. Conseal seems to work well with no configuring for ICQ other than letting it to allow it as a program. I keep my Zone Alarm on stealth and think it may be working fine now, we'll see. Any ideas for making ICQ secure and working well with Zone Alarm? I have the newest release of Zone Alarm (2.022 on Feb. 6/00) which is supposed to have changes for ICQ to work better...any experiences out there? And by the way, I have stuck with 99a, tried 99b but couldn't transfer files. There is a site with a fix for that.... http://www.angelfire.com/mb/icqfiletransfer/

if anyone is still having problems with icq and zonealarm. you need to get icq 2000a with the latest zonealarm. they work fine with each other. and we have tried some firends of mine all got together and tried a few little tricks on icq to gain acces but to no avial the only thing you need to be carefull about is files form people you dont know.
The only problem i have come across is making it work on a proxy but you can use 99b for that.

i have both aim and icq 2000a beta....
i use them both for different reasons. the one-on-one chat module is highly irritating in icq because it flickers constantly and more than half the time i cannot get it to work anyways. so i use aim for one on one chatting because it is simple and easy to read and ALWAYS works. I like the customizability of icq, which aim does not have, so i utilize those options for icq as well. the file transfers on both programs over my 56k modem are gawdawfully slow and ineffective half the time.
in conclusion, i would have to say that both programs could stand improvement, but i keep both of them around.
