I like many others enjoy playing counterstrike. The only problems i my cabel gets a terrible ping. Is there anything I can do about this beside getting a DSL which is not available in my area yet?

Thanks

head on over to that site and read up on cable! since i see you are using gamespy go for the games with the lowest pings of course. what kind of pings are you getting by the way? also depending on what time you are playing at, the server specs and its connections, how many players. search around on the net to find server near where you live for the best results

Were I have cable, and also i use gamespy, the weird thing is that I get 60-90 pings, and sometimes i get 200-300 pings in the same server..

My pings run from 300 to 500. They suck. I dont know if it's because I have to use the dial up to connect my cable to the internet or if it's the cable. My download speeds are good. On mp3 it downloads at 60-70KBS. Not bad. It's a 1gig system with a kt7raid.

I'll check out the links thanks. Any other ideas are appriaciated.

300-500 is about what I get on my 33.6.

What do you mean having to use dial-up to connect the cable to the internet ?????

I live in Maryland and they do not have the digitail lines put in yet. So we who are not so fortuate must use a 56K to dial up and then we can stay connected. My download if fast, but my upload sucks. As soon as DSL is available Im switching.

Ahhhh... the dark side of cable. The throughput is fantastic, but latency can be really bad! That stinks!

I can only download at about 40K/sec on my DSL line, but I get pings of 20-30ms on most Game servers located within 400 miles of my town.

Still, you might want to call your cable provider to complain. A friend of mine had this type of problem and after he (and many others) complained, the cable company added another access point in his neighborhood. Took a few months, but they eventually got it.

I usually get good pings around a minimum of 15ms to 30ms depending on the time and day, i usually average about 40ms - 50ms but i can stand it, can't really tell the difference. I didn't even tweak my line, I get however, very crappy download speeds because my ISP caps the connection at 512k down/128k up, but i get good pings http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif !

There are a few ways to improve your ping, many of which are already listed. Also having a fast computer can bring your average ping down 10 points or so.

I don't know what you people are complaing about, I have a 56k modem that connects at only 26.4k and it is shared with three computers. When I play Counter-Strike at home I have to put up with pings of 350 and up. I have been trying to get DSL or Cable for over a year now and still no solution under $70 a month has appeared.

Loki, I suggest that you should shut-up if you don't have anything good to say, and last time I checked Loki, you were the one who needed to brush up on your Counter-Strike skills, I believe that I was in the lead last time we played. Also please take into account that many of the people here have full time jobs and don't have the luxury of playing Counter-Strike all the time, most of them play it just to have some fun, and they don't need to be a good player to have fun.

As for pings, some of us (like me) can't help the pings we get, but that doesn't stop me from tossing you around in Counter-Strike.

Next time put some thought into your post loki...

Ping doesn't really matter that much, but does help quite a bit too. I can't really tell the difference between 120 ping and 30 ping in CS. Is it just me?

Thanks Frozen,

If Loki had half of the skills he thinks he has he would not be posting the question "were can I find the cheet codes". Your an expert in your own mind.

And just for the record I notice you previously posted your new system is a 950 T-bird, mine is a 1gig T-bird. Although it may not make much of a difference in CS-mine is BIGER i mean faster. Hahhahhahhahh

Thanks for the links. I have tweaked my cable and dont notice much difference. I dont know if it's because Im running 2000K, but will defiantly check out the tweaks for CS.

one other thing to do is get gamespy or kali and check their server list since you can sort it by ping and see if there are better servers to play on.
i used to play on servers where i got a 150 or so ping til i discovered there were many that i could get a sub 70 ping on...

Thanks, I'll also try out game spy. I believe most of the problems lies in the 56K i have to dial up with for my cable modem. It uploads very slow so when Im sending data to the sever it's slow.
