Here's the deal:

Windows runs great, no problems at all.

All my games either lock, boot me to the desktop, or quit in some form of error.

I reinstalled, reformatted, redid everything twice, still same problem. I've replaced every piece of hardware in my system save my HDD with no answer. I've upgraded from a KA7+700 to A7V+1000. No answer. I've checked for overheating but there isn't any.

I do however, think it is a problem with my sound drivers, because if I take my sound card out, or disable the drivers, the games will run with no errors.

Asus A7V
Tbird 1000@1000
GeForce2 MX @ 175/200 w/custom cooling
SBLive! Value

W98SE
Det3 6.31's
Live!Ware 3.0 with updated driver set
Diablo2 1.04B
UT 4.36
Worms Armageddon (install version I don't know what it is exactly)

What is going on?

Have you tried reinstalling your sound card drivers from the Creative website? If so, have you tried the older ones that came with the card?

Also, have you tried reinstalling the newest DirectX?

Exactly what I would suggest.

Play around with your soundcard drivers. What version of DX do you have?

I installed DX8 but thought it was messing my system up, so I downloaded an uninstaller and reinstalled 7.0a. I tried reinstalling my sound drivers, and am in the process of re-downloading liveware. I also tried replacing my emu10k1.vxd and mmdevldr.vxd with older versions but that didn't fix it either. I ran SFC and it said setupx.dll and user.exe were corrupted but I looked at those files and the ones that I had were of the exact same size as the ones I restored from the CD, but the only difference was that the create date was unknown. Restoring the two files didn't seem to help either.

For the A7V, the PCI slots share resources with the AGP slot and USB ports. Stating this, make sure your SBLive! is in PCI slot 3.

Also, check your IRQ's--I'm betting money that you've got an IRQ conflict between two components.

I have the Asus A7V with the SBLive Value. One thing that was in the instructions for the SBLive was to go into bios and set IRQ 5(i think) to Legacy device, otherwise it might cause some conflicts.

As of now, my sblive is in slot 4 and my modem in 5 (right next to the AMR slot). I originally had the modem in 3 and sc in 4 but the computer would freeze upon boot. Moving it to 5 fixed that problem. I will try moving the sc to 3 and reserving irq5 though.

Here's my current IRQ layout

00-system timer
01-keyboard
03...all the usual stuff
5 is my modem
5 is also my sblive
5 is also both my USB host controllers
5 also has a ACPI IRQ holder for PCI IRQ Steering
6 is my floppy (Is there an option to disable this in BIOS because I have no floppy devices in my system and it's another IRQ)
7 is my LPT (Also sharing with SB16EMulation)
8 is the clock
9 is SCI IRQ Used by ACPI Bus
10 is my Promise controller
10 also has the ACPI IRQ steering thing
11 is my MX
11 is also another IRQ Steering device
The rest is normal to a computer

How do you find out where all the IRQ's are assained to? I have a A7V and i may experiance one of these problems. so How can I find out for example... which IRQ is my PCI modem on?

thanks...

Try disabling SB16 emulation.

Back in DOS mode, devices didn't like sharing IRQ's at ALL. In fact, they didn't. This emulation mode is known to lock up computers fairly frequently.

Of course it may not help, but its an easy try.

Disabling doesn't help, since none of my games use DOS Eumlation.

Just to make it clear though, it isn't really lockups that are happening, rather fatal errors that boot me out of the game.

If you go to device manager and double click the "Computer" icon at the very top it will give you that list. Or you can select it and click Properties.

I now have my sblive in pci3 and my modem in pci4. I had to force everything (USB, ATA100, and Modem) to 10 and the sblive to 5 in the bios. Otherwise something would end up on 6 and would lock my computer while booting. (Something with the Floppy taking up 6 I assume) Windows works once again but my games still don't. Here's what happens: I'm in the game, and suddenly my keyboard will drop out. I can still use the mouse but can't use the keyboard. After a few seconds of this it will kick me to the desktop.

Hi there....I am thinking that the problem you are having is the same one I am having also...wondering if you figured out what to do..and I have read all the replies and my gosh I am not computer literate enough to understand what everyone was saying...but I do know that I have a Vibra 128 sound card and I had to install the driver from the net..maybe you might be able to help me out here...thanking you in advance

well I'm giving WinME a shot- hopefully it's good for something.

What problem are you having? Please be more specific. Are you having trouble installing your drivers, or getting lockups, or what?

WinME behaves exactly the same. Still can't defrag either... What is going on? This is SERIOUSLY screwed up...

Here's an excerpt from my dxdiag... I still think it is some file that isn't right..

Do the motherboards you have been using have VIA chipsets?

Yes, the A7V uses the VIA KT133(a?) Chipset

I have an A7V with an SBLive! in PCI slot 5. I also have a GeForce2 MX, and a WDC 20.5GB HDD. Therefore our systems are nearly identical besides the processor (Duron 650) and ram (256MB PC133). I am also running ME.

Did you install the Via 4in1 drivers? There is no doubt that it is your sound card. Do not forget that the card could also be physically damaged, but the damage may not be visible to the naked eye (static shock). If you have a friend with an SBLive, see if you can't try his in there. I bought an SBLive off a guy once that "looked" perfect, but it was defective. There are also other drivers for the SBLive other than Live!Ware 3.0. I downloaded drivers from Creative called SBLW9XUP.exe.

Definitely try moving the card to PCI slot 5, regardless if you have to take something out. If that doesn't work, get your hands on another one. Hope this works for ya!

I think Undertow has a good idea. Or you could just remove your SB from the computer and remove all its drivers and try out the games. If they work after that get your SB rma'd.

I tried with the card in 5 a while ago, and switched away because everyboday said it was IRQ Conflicts. Putting the SBLive in 5 makes it share with the USB's and my modem (which I had in 4). I can move the modem but it will still share with the USB's. As of now my SBLive is alone on 3.

I tried switching sound cards a while ago, reaplacing a working SBLive with mine in my friend's computer. His ran fine with mine, mine locked up with his. I could try it again sometime though...

Lately my system has slowly been getting worse and worse. At first it was just the games, but now after a few reinstalls everything seems to be starting to "break". Defrag freezes my comp unless it's in safe mode, i get stray pixels after minimizing/closing windows, even windows itself locks and freezes much more than normal. I get noticeably more errors in various DLL and VXD files when running apps (like winamp, IExplore) as well. My CD Burner used to burn at it's rated 4x when I first installed the software after formatting my HD (4x4x32) but now suddenly my software only has an option for 1x or 2x.... What in the world is happenening? Hardware or software? I am planning to zero-fill my drive and restart, being EXTREMELY CAREFUL as to what I install, with EXTENSIVE GAME TESTING after each TINY CHANGE. I need to wait a little before doing this, though, because right now I have a lot of things going on, and can't spend too much time working with this thing.

When I restart- what drivers should I use? I think i'm going to go with the via 4in1 4.24 drivers, LW30, and Nv6.31 drivers. Those are all the drivers that my friend has in his system and it works perfectly (KT7, TBird 900, 128MB PC133, GF2MX, SBLive, WD2.05GB HDD)
