are you a "hard core" gamer? or do you just play games occasionally?

That's what we need to know.

Any pc can really be a "gaming pc". Just needs to have the recommended requirements.

i can't really consider myself a "hard-core gamer". i play rogue spear, soon the covert ops expansion, starcraft, etc. usually 5-7 days a week but i like good grafix. i am interested in the geforce2 mx, can you guys give me some specific manufactuer/modle. the system i will be putting the card in will look something like this: duron 800mhz processor, abit kt7 motherboard, 256-512 mb ram, 40 gig hard drive, soundblaster live (maybe x-gamer), plextor plexwriter 10/12/32, maybe dvd. that is what it is looking like so far. thx

a little advice, there is no need for 512 MB of ram, 256 would be fine (and even that's overkill). i dont really think it matters which geforce mx you get, i had the 3d prophet 2 and was very satisfied (lets not mention the fact that i broke it http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif).

I want to build this:
AMD Duron 700
ABIT KT7 RAID
INWIN Full tower w/non-Athlon power supply
128MB PC133
Quantum Fireball 10Gb, ATA-33 (salvaged from my old pc)
SB Live! X-Gamer or Value???
Voodoo3 3000 (salvaged from my old PC)
CD, floppy 17in monitor n **** (old pc...)
Cambridge SoundWorks FPS1000

Tell me about it! Give me your feedback and tell me what I should change.
How is my hard drive... will a slow hard drive slow my games and fps. I play Half-Life: Counter-Strike. I want to be a "hard core gamer" after I get cable!!!

i c your point about the memory, but i also have found that memory is one of the most worth while and cost effective upgrades you can make on a computer. i may not need the 512 now, but i know i will. i will probly stick with the 256 for now due to the "lack of funding".

i don't know about you guys but it would not take me long to fill a 10 gig hard drive. considering operating system, office 2000 premium, all my games, and visual and macromedia studio, plus all my downloads and 2.2 gigs of mp3s, which will be growing when i get cable this x-mas, that 10 gig would not last long for me, but then again that is just me. right now i am using 2 hard drives that i have salvaged from other pcs, one is a 13.6 gig and the other is a 10.2, one is constantly full and the other is usually half full, they are both ATA/33, i c the ata/33 as a drawback, i will probly be getting a 40 gig maxtor 7200rmp ATA/66 with my new system

RunToomey,

I'd cash that Voodoo, if you are looking to spend money. It's old and yucky. Check out the latest Radeons by ATI.

i say get more memory than you need
128 is all fine and dandy, but if you are like me and have a lot open, even when gaming, you need it. I will ahve ICQ, mIRC, Kali, Battlecom and then teh game open all at once
with that much running 128 megs is not nearly enough. i would run at least 256, and if you get more run it til you get a second system. i ahve 384 right now and will drop it to 256 when i get a third system.
having too much memory is never a bad thing, adn with the lower prices it is time to buy all you can afford.
i think i should get another 256 meg stick since i talked about it so much...

Do this for a hard drive! Just ordered one myself! It's a 45gb IBM Deskstar ATA/100 7200rpm. THAT is an upgrade http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif. I have a 10gb myself, but have gotten into digital video editing and NEEDED the space. You want ATA/100 if you can.

512mb RAM is insane unless you do heavy photo editing stuff. Right now, 128mb is the recommended amount for playing games. Almost 2 years ago, it was 64mb (even that was sort of a lot for the average gamer - me). By the time it gets to 256mb, DDR RAM and other kinds will be out, making your RAM obsolete.

If you get a DVD player, get the Pioneer. It is the best one.

Always glad to help a fellow Rogue Spear player http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

If you're running WinME or 2000, you could definitely use more than 128mb.

Win95 ran great on 64mb, Win98 ran great on 128mb (if you didn't push your system). It's only $75 for 256mb of PC133, so WHY NOT? Right?

just make sure that 256 meg chip is supported by your motherboard. 32x64's won't work in all board's they will work in most duron ,tbird's . just check to be sure before you spend your money!
