half life beta 3.0 shortcut missing

Hello..I like to play 3D shooters so I downloaded the Half -life beta 3.0 Size 39.6MB freeware license ,when I tried to play the games I get An Errors messages that the games has a missing shortcut and they advice me to choose another shortcut they provided ,at Hwinfo.exe I click yes ,but when I tried to Run the games nothing shows up ,and all the color in my desktop icon Has been changed to Grey ...any ideas what is going on,,I have win 98 ,K6-2/350MHZ MMX CPU.
64Mega SDRAM pc/100, Voodoo3/2000 16MEg AGP .BTW:No virus detected (Norton)thanks in advance.
