As of 10/24 Red Alert 2 is finally out.

Go get it now! Looks like it uses a heavily modified version of the Tiberium Sun engine, it also supports resolutions of up to 1024*768. The movies are much better quality now.
Many various gameplay improvements have been made. Westwood made sure that every unit was important in one way or another.

Infantry can now barricade themselves in buildings, Allied ore trucks can chronoshift and the Soviet ore trucks have light machine guns on them. Unfortuneatly there seems to be a lack of air units. The Allies have Rocketters, Harriers, Nighthawk helicopters and Aircraft carrier jets. However the Soviets have only one air unit, which is the Blimp. The game is very well balanced, the tesla coils have been tuned down quite a bit, and the Allies now have a heavy defence building, the Prisim tower, which can channel energy from other nearby prisim towers and release a deadly beam. Allies also have a ground unit that will change properties depending on what kind of unit is riding in it. If you put a GI in it then it will have a chaingun, if you put a engineer in it, it will be a repair vehicle, if you put a tesla trooper in it, then it will be like a tesla-tank.

There are many other improvements, each country has it's own unique unit, for instance Great Britian has snipers, and Cuba has terrorists. The paratroopers now come in squads of around 8 people instead of the measily five in the first game. Each side has it's own different superweapons. Aliies have the Chronosphere (which now transports groups of units) and a weather control center (which can unleash a lightning storm, very deadly, reminds me of Earth 2150). Soviets have the nuke (duhhh, which is a bit better and it leaves bhind radiation that will kill units) and the Iron Curtian (now targets groups of units. Also, when a superweapon building is deployed, it will reveal the location to all players and display the time remaining before it will be online.

There are many different modes of multiplayer games, including a Co-op campaign against the computer.

Many of you are probably thinking that the game is a bit unbalanced in the allies favor since most of the new units are allied units. But fear not, the Soviets have several disticnt new units and buildings that greatly enhance the soviit army. One such building is the Nuclear Power plant, no longer do you have to build tons and tons of power plants to power your tesla coils. One Nuclear power plant can handle the power for an entire base. The downside is that if it gets destroyed.... you get the idea...
They also have a cloning facility that will produce an exact replica of any infantry unit you create, free of charge. Good way of getting an army up quickly. They also have the Apocolapse tank which many of you know as the Mammoth tank but it is beefed up a bit. Kills units in one or two hits most of the time. Also the tesla troopers, if they are near a tesla coil, can pump their energy into it, enchancing the damage that the tesla coil delivers.
The blimp is also a great weapon of mass destruciton, killing buildings and most units in one or two hits, but it is a very slow unit.

You will be in awe at the great Naval vessels that this game has to offer. You must check out the Crusader (I think that's what its called) that packs TWO V3 guided missiles. Similar to the Allied Crusier in the first game.

Anyway, enough chat, go out and get this game now!!

Just got mine a couple of days ago. I can't wait to try it. Diablo 2 will take the back seat http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

When I first heard about RA2, I was like, "PSHH! GAY! Gonna be exactly like crappy TS" NOT! I got a copy from a friend and man its SURPRISINGLY very fun! Both teams are equally balanced (finally) and every unit is cool. This is prolly the first C&C game I actually like the Allies better! =)

I was astounded by the unbelieveably pathetic graphics, though I don't expect true 3d, I expect decent detail, but the graphics just stink, I got the game, but that just turned me right off, they say it is an upgraded Tiberiun Sun engine, but Tiberiun Sun had far better graphics.

i thought its a excellent game, not really playing the first RA, it was freshingly good that companies are still producing games that are not all FPS and shoot & kill (i am thogh a Q3A addict). i'd recommend the game to people that have'nt played alot of the first RA or Age of Empires...

cant wait for the Dune game coming out!!
that will ROCK!!!

Hey Snuffy!

You know that you can up the in-game resolution right? Make it alot better.

They even have a program that will allow you to make the game run in even higher resolutions than 1024*768, although I haven't been able to get it to work.

Graphics aren't everything. I mean look at Diablo II, lots of people love that game and play it all day. It's only resolution is 640*480! Give RA2 a break!

Yeah, graphics aren't everything, and Diablo2 was an awesome game, but i expect an improvement in graphics from the original, which they basically haven't bothered with.

and yes, i run it at 1024x768.

No, Blizzard hasn't bothered with graphical enhancements from the origional Diablo.
Well, not resolution or detail settings anyway.

However Westwood's C&C:Red Alert offered two playable resolutions 640*400 and 640*480. In RA2 you can go up to 1024*768 and you also have the option of setting detail levels. I would say that RA2 had a few graphical improvements over Red Alert.

As for Blizzard, I am beginning to think that 640*480 is the only resolution that their monitors can run at. Hehe, look at the resolutions of Warcraft II and Starcraft, one and the same. But of course this allows some of even the slowest computers to play these games well. On the other had, sometimes even RA2 bogs down my system(P3 700 w/256mb RAM) when a nuke hits.

Sure RA2 has its flaws, but its still a great game. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Only wish that they had released a level editor with it.
