half-life question

When I'm playing this, it periodically pauses, i.e its as if I hit the pause button as it dispalys pause on the screen and I have to hit the pause button to return to the game.........is this normal ????

That happened to me a lot. Have you got the latest patch? What kind of system do you have? I think it was happening on my system because I was using software rendering.

I'M RUNNING WIN 98 .....256 RAM...ABIT BX6 REV 2....3DFX VOODOO 3000.....

HOW DO I CHECK THE SOFTWARE RENDERING ???

at the first menu in half life, click on configure, then go to video mode. make sure it is not using software, use direct3d, or opengl
