How can I silence the initialization of the dial up sounds of my modem?
I've done it before but I had to reinstall Netzero and now its ALOT louder than before.

This really belongs in the Tech support forum.
With that said, make your way over to Modem Properties (in 98 I assume it's Control Panel->Modems etc) There should be a sliding bar for controlling the modem volume.
If not, select advanced, I think. Try to find a place where there is one blank line that lets you enter modem commands. Enter 'M0' (thats Letter M and Number Zero) and that will silence your modem.

I had to stuff the speaker on my modem, since the software volume had no effect on it. I found that a filter off two of my Winston cigs, when stuffed into the speaker with care (yea right) shut it up to just barely audible :-)
BUT, try the volume controls first, they usually work.
