I just recently got my cable internet and I'm not THAT impressed by the speed of it. I recently entered a Internet game but only get like 80ms to 160ms ping (all in 1 game - changes very often!). Is this normal? (And my connection is capped to 400kpbs/128kbps downstream/upstream)

My cable. And I've seen better (couple times I've seen teens). But on average it probably is around 40-50ms. Using Gamespy, I have so many servers to choose from that ping <50 that I don't even have to worry about the other ones. (Games: Q2, HL, HLCS, UT)

i htink a lot of it depends on the server. i have not done unreal tournament, but i do play half life and chose the servers i play on based on ping. i chose ones that were geographically close and were on fat pipes...

It seems my Cable Internet Connection ain't so good. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif Because I get like 180 to 300ms ping sometimes!! Is the ethernet card important for the performance of the cable net?

I get anywhere from 30 + in Unreal Tournament games. Depending on how many people are in the game.

depends how many people are "sucking" off of your cable. The more people, the more bandwidth is taken. Although it is quite difficult to suck up a cables bandwidth.
80 piong is your BEST ping? or average ping?

I get 40-100 in UT, at least that is what I look for. And Quake 3, 20-60 is the norm. Go Figure http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I don't play UT (dont get mad for posting here...), but I usually get 40-150 when playing CounterStrike. If it's any higher I will leave and join a better server. As for downloads- alot of the time the download is finished before the max speed could be reached. I usually get 50kb/sec to 200kb/sec.
Depends on the server. I can usually have multiple downloads without slowing any of them down.
