The contestants are: Quake III, Unreal Tournament, and Half-Life.

1. Which one is used more often at LAN Parties?
2. Which is better?
3. Which is more fun?
4. Which has better Graphics?
5. Which one do you like better?

Cost is not a decider at all, but I am not gonna buy both.

I want to get into those kinds of games, because I want to start going to LAN Parties, but I only really play racing games right now.

Thanks for any help.

Little did you know, you've touched off a debate second only to the Mac vs. PC.

Here're my answers/opinions.

1) Don't know.

2) UT has more interesting weapons and far more play modes. Quake III has the old standards and gives a more frantic deathmatch experience.

I don't like plain Half-Life deathmatch very much but Team Fortress and Counterstrike are both fabulous. Those two together are played just as much as Q3A or UT.

I'd rank UT 1st, Half-Life 2nd, Q3A 3rd.

3) This is a lot like 2. If you're looking for an absolutely frantic frag-fest, go with Q3A. If you want to put a little more thought into your game modes, UT is your game. If you're looking for a slightly slower game, go H-L. None of these games is slow, however, so you'll never be bored in any of them. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

4) Graphics is easy. Q3A wins, UT 2nd, HL 3rd. Half-Life is a Quake II era game, however, and you can't expect it to really keep up. Once again, they all look good.

5) My personal favorite is UT, followed by HL, then Q3A.

UT: Best weapons, best balance, best play modes.

Q3A: Best speed, best graphics, best 'in-your-face' action.

H-L: Best play modes (but only has 2, however both are great).

Also, I just want to know, what is a good speed computer for a LAN party?

Here is my Comp:

P III 500 @ 620 (124 x 5)
128B PC100 Ram
13GB 5400RPM HD
Diamond Viper V770 32M
Sound blaster AWE64
Asus P3B-F Motherboard.

Is this good enough to be good at LAN parties?

I always like to have above average equipment...

I don't know why http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Also, I don't know what speed my NIC is, but It is used for Rogers@home. Would it work for LAN gaming?

You won't have above average hardware with a setup like that, but you'll be fine. And your NIC should work.

Easiest way for you to answer those questions would be for you to download the demos and try them for yourself. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
All of the games you listed have demos out that allow you to play a few levels with all of the weapons.
I prefer Unreal Tournament, because it has better graphics and better gameplay. Weapons in all 3 games are really similar except the jackhammer and translocator(teleporter) in UT.
LAN party? make sure you have a 10/100 NIC. You don't want to be the slow guy with a 10MB card when everyone else has 100MB cards.
You have an average system. Thats not a flame, its just reality. It will be more than enough to play the games listed smoothly. Just don't be the host (LAN usually has a server anyways)

Let me know if you let outsiders into your games. I'd love to hook up with any of the above games. We often get together with friends and throw a little LAN party ourselves. Drink a beer, Frag a freind. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I am one step ahead of ya Engrain http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

I downloaded the Demo's last night, and so far, UT is by FAR a better game for me.

Quake III is waay to diffucult for me, I get killedwithin 30 seconds every time http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

UT seems like a lot more fun http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

If you're getting smacked in Q3, make sure you aren't playing on the higest difficulty--the bots are UNGODLY good.

And in Q3, people DO die more frequently--it's just a style.

I am trying to play UT some more, but today when I went to open it, it went in, but whenever I try to play a game, it freezes at the "PreCaching", and I need to reset the computer.

What could be causing this?

Quake III also froze yesterday, but I haven't tried it today...

~edit~

Oh yeah, and I did have Quake III set to the easiest level...

The file (umod) should auto-decompress. Just click it.

"should" is the key word there. It auto-decompressed on my older system (server) but I had to do it the hard way on my main system.
If anyone else has problems with the .umod files not extracting, try this.
Place the files in a directory.. Example C:\temp and then do the following
(assume UT is in C:\unrealtournament and the file to extract is called utbonuspack.umod)

Windows start button <click>
Select 'Run'
type - C:\unrealtournament\system\setup.exe install C:\temp\utbonuspack.umod

http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif got it to work.. Now I can play as the Warcow or Nali!!!

1.) Quake3
2.) Quake3
3.) Quake3
4.) QUAKE3!!!!
5.) Quake3

Quake3 has far, far better graphics, far better level design, far better character design, tonnes of skins and level + mods (more than UT), and is more fun to play MP.

This is exactly what I wrote about. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Everyone's got different tastes. Personally, I dumped Quake III after playing the demo. UT has a permanent spot on my drive.

Go buy the game. You already know you like it. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I just downloaded a couple files for UT. a bonus pack and a map pack. I can't get them to work <sigh> They come up as Modpack.umod what the heck is .umod?! heh I tried placing them in the System directory, in the main directory. I give up!!
It should extract or something and I don't know why its now. I have WinZip and WinRAR.
Anyone have these files or have any ideas?

Entragian ][ come get some!
