Try adding "-zone 1024" to your shortcut. There's another one you should add to your shortcut that tells Half-Life how much memory to use. I'll try and find it. Good Luck.

Try this (including quotes):

"C:\SIERRA\Half-Life\hl.exe" - zone 1024

Remember to try all possibilities. That's what I do when trying to solve a problem. (ie put "zone" right next to the dash (-) )

My error says bad surface extents 224/448 hmmm.... I updated the version from the website instead of using the auto-updater. That got rid of the wanting the cd error. I played the training mode with no problems. When I started a new game it crashes when Gordon is still in the train entering the base.
Once again, I've had this game running before. This just started when I reinstalled it.

no the new boards will work fine the memory bus is still running at 100mhz
and I only had that problem when I overclocked my bus speed above 115MHZ when I droped it back down the problem went away so I'm pretty sure it's a timming issue
when your reinstall did you go in a delete any left over files and defrag your system first ?

do this uninstall then check the directory where the games was and make sure all files where deleted then run defrag before you reinstall the game see if that works also make sure your CD is clean no fanger prints etc, etc.

I'll give it a shot scotter. I don't have to mess with the registry right? just the HD files?

yup I deleted alll the files in C:\SIERRA And deleted the sierra folder.
then i did a scandisk then a defrag reinstalled half-life started it up then loaded a new game about 1.7 mins into the the train ride then it hits BAD SUFACE EXTENTS 1888/0.

I even tryed buying a new hdd installed windows all the drivers and stuff then installed half-life started it up and still non luck.

If I dont start playing half-life soon i will go crazy! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

Problem
Bad Surface Extents: error occurs when starting
A "Bad Surface Extents" error occurs when starting Half-life.

Solution
Corrupted Install Of Half-Life

A "Bad Surface Extents" error occurs when the program is unable to load Half-life
WADs due to a corrupt install. Follow these directions for a clean install of Half-life:

1. Uninstall Half-life.

2. Run a disk diagnostic utility, such as ScanDisk. Click on START,
PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, SYSTEM TOOLS and then SCANDISK. ScanDisk
will find errors such as lost clusters, truncated files and others. If ScanDisk finds
errors, follow the on-screen instructions and fix them.

3. Run the Disk Defragmenter utility. Click on START, PROGRAMS,
ACCESSORIES, SYSTEM TOOLS and then DISK DEFRAGMENTER. This utility
will sort the files into contiguous order.

4. Make a system disk for the program. A system disk will solve many errors by
eliminating conflicts and making more memory available to the program. System
disks are also an important step in trouble shooting errors. To create a system
disk for Windows 95 place a blank high-density diskette in the A: drive. Then,
open the My Computer icon from the desktop and highlight the icon for Drive A:.
Right-click on the icon and choose Format. In the resulting dialog box, make sure
there are checks in the boxes for "Full" and "Copy System Files". Click on OK to
start the process.

Once the disk is formatted and while still in My Computer, double-click on the icon
for the C: drive. Look for the file called MSDOS.SYS in the list of files. If the file
does not appear, click on the View menu, choose Options and then the View tab.
Make sure "Show all files" is checked and "Hide MS DOS file extensions" is NOT
checked. Once the MSDOS.SYS file is found, right-click on it and choose Send
To 3 ? Floppy (A). A prompt will appear, asking to replace an existing file - click
on OK. Boot the computer up with the system disk. This insures that
unnecessary drivers or TSRs (resident programs) will not be loaded, avoiding
potential conflicts.

Verify that sufficient hard drive space for reinstallation of the program is available.
Remember to allocate twice the listed space on compressed drives!

5. Make sure there are no other programs running in WIN95:

- Hold down the CTRL and ALT keys and press the DEL key. This will bring up a
Close Program Box. The Close Program Box will show the currently running
programs.

- The only program listed should be Explorer. All other programs should be
disabled. Highlight one of them and click on the End Task button, repeat until
Explorer is the only listed program.

- Once the Explorer is the only program in the Close Program Box try the program.
