I'm not a big gamer but do like to play Shadow Warrior in dos now and then. I have a 166mmx@188 75fsb with 64MB pc100ram, ATi 4mb Rage II pci card. When playing the game booted from dos the video is a little choppy/jerky. When playing from windows it isnt but has other problems.

Any ideas how to smooth out the playing in dos?

There is this disk buffering driver for dos, built in in Dos. But you have to load it in the Config.sys/Autoexec.bat. Can't remember what name it had though... Perhaps you not having this driver could explain why the video is slow. It's the same thing when you copy things in Dos or in Windows, Windows is much faster unless you've loaded the disk buffer driver. Don't know if anyone else knows which driver this was?

'Twas something like smartdrv.sys I think...

Yep, just exit to dos and type "smartdrv" or you can do as nano says and add it to your autoexec.bat. I don't have it running while I'm in Win, but I have it come on when I exit.

Thanks for the info. I tried typing smartdrv in dos and get a screen that tells me what smartdrv features are on for which drive, the c drive has no for buffer, is that what I need to enable? How, and what size?

Just typing smartdrv doesnt smooth things out in the game. And when I exit dos after enabling smartdrv, does it shut down on exiting to windows or do I need to type in a command to shut it off?
As you can see I need some dos lessons!

All programs or TSR's (or was it TRS?? http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif) not present in your
autoexec.bat/Config.sys/Dosstart.bat will be "cleared" when you reset your computer and return back to Windows as far as I know. As for speeding up your game... I can remember that Shadow Warrior supported Glide so you could buy a Glide capable vid card, though I think that's a bit a drastic measure for just that one game. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

You didn't tell me the problems you had in Windows when running the game ,perhaps you can try and solve them as you did say that the game runs fine in Windows. I had some problems with my soundcard when running Duke3d (a BUILD game as well) in Windows, but I solved them by downloading the newest drivers for my Soundcard (SBLive).

When in windows it sometimes just stops, the program quits. Also when Lo Wang goes underwater the game quits. There is a patch that I've downloaded thats supposed to cure that problem for soundblaster and most pci cards but I havent executed it yet, and may not.

I have a ES 1370 onboard pci sound (SB drivers).
