Do you think Aliases are cheating?

So I was playing Half-Life against some people here at my school, and since I am a Half-Life NUT... I TOOK THEM TO SCHOOL! But then one of them found out that I was using some aliases and said it was cheating. I have longjump on one button, and I have some quick-select weapon buttons. I can do a longjump without the button, I just find it more convenient. I can select weapons without the buttons, I just find it more convenient. Anyway, it kinda stung a bit, so I was just wondering what you all thought about it.

I dont believe thats cheating...at all!
I have a rocket jump alias, just cuz im too lazy to look down myself.
Part of playing FPS's is tweaking out your controls to maximize your characters abilities, using all alias and binds you want..
Cheating would be using a command that makes everything bright, so dark spots are illuminated, or changing model skins so they have huge poles sticking out of them so u can see them around a corner...
Little else is cheating. (camping isn't cheating either...dont care what anyone says...I dont camp usually, but its most definitly not cheating)

Either they are **** and are looking for an excuse to put u down or they dont understand that you are not modifying the game at all, you are simply making it easier to perform an otherwise difficult task.

I mean, people get paid 100's of thousands of kahuna to come up with that sh*t for a living!!

They are just sad losers! Aliases aren't cheating at all. They don't know what cheating really means... Szech, your friends are sad losers! Just because they don't know how to modify it doesn't mean that you can't. It's just like saying you can't change the default controls!

My aliases I'm most proud of:
Gauss jump: press to pull gauss gun out, let go to do gauss jump and return to previous weapon.
Hide the RPG laser: turn the laser off, and when you press the fire button, the laser will quickly turn on, the rocket will fire, and when you let go, the laser will turn off, and the rocket will still be going in the same direction. Good for hiding your location, firing, then taking cover.
Bowfrag: selects the crossbow, and when you fire unzoomed, instead of shooting slow, exploding arrows, it will zoom in quickly, fire, then zoom out. One shot kills at close range!
I ain't going out like that: Selects the crowbar, then commits suicide. For when you know you're going to die.
Chuck it far: Selects grenades, then primary attack button throws them regular, secondary does a long jump then throws them. With the long jump module, I can chuck a grenade from where the MP5 is in bounce to where the crossbow is.

Anyway, at the end of that fateful game, the score was:

Ummm, what exactly are aliases? I haven't played Half-Life, but I play a lot of UT and some Q3...those "shortcuts/aliases" sound waaaay cool! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif If I can use them on those games that is...

Aliases are scripts. I don't know much about UT, but in Half-Life, you can do a long jump if you have a long jump module. In order to do this, you run forward, hold down duck, then press jump. That's three buttons to press, and the timing of the duck and jump have to be just right. Instead, I put this into the console:

alias +longjump "+duck; wait; +jump"
alias -longjump "-duck; -jump"
bind m +longjump

and all I have to do is press M when I'm running forward to do the long jump. It's basically a way of simplifying things.

In my opinion: Anything that was included with the developers release of the game, and something that they allow you to do to the game is not cheating. So if they set it up so you can create an alias, that is not cheating. If they allow you to stand in a corner for 5 minutes, that is not cheating. If a user modifies the game in any way to give them an advantage over the others, I consider that cheating. So no, I would definetly say that using aliases is not cheating, but that these people were just making excuses for losing. Does that sound like a fair statement?
