quake2 ping?

how come whenever i start a network server with quake2, my ping isn't zero,,it's usually somewhere around 40-50,,,,i thought that since i was the server, that my ping should be zero,,i guess there is something im not understanding.

It's normal to have a ping of 40 ~ 50 when you start your own game. My dropped down to the most minimum of 28ms on my PentiumIII600E.
