I'm about to install an extra hard drive. This means that my CD letter designation will go up from D: to E:. I have a lot of games installed on my primary drive C:. Does anyone know whether my games will recognize the new letter E: as my CD drive or will I have to reinstall them all? I have Windows 95 as my operating system. Is there a way I can go in the registry and let my games recognize my CD drive's new letter E:?
You have some options.
1. Buy partition Magic 5. This has a program called Drive Mapper. It searches for references to the drive letter and changes it to reflect you're new configuration. I don't know if there's any freeware/shareware programs that do this.
If you wanted to go this route, check the bargin bins for partiton magic 4, and if you find it look to see if it has drive mapper. It could save some cash. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
2. Manually go through your registry and change the paths. I've done this a few times....but it might not work for all your games, and I would recommend against it.
3. Go through your games folders and locate the files that save your games....copy them to a temp location. Re-install your games, and then move the files or folders back to the game folders.
4. Not sure about this one;
Many games in the launcher program (the window that pops up when you insert the cd)....have the option to re-install. I'm not sure if this leaves saved games and would change the cd path....but I imagen it would.

I just happen to have Partition Magic, but I haven't installed it yet. I didn't know about or overlooked that feature. Thanks for telling me about it. Also, thanks for your other options as well, seti.

It's been a while since I have done anything with this area, but I seem to remember editing the game's ini file to point to the different drive for some games and editing the registry for other games. I would find the key that the software was under, then edit the appropriate section. Hope it helps. Bill

Some games like Baldurs Gate and Planescape Torment have a .ini file where you can edit it. For example, in Planescape Torments .ini file, it sais
HD0:=c:\games\PlaneScape
CD1:=F:\CD1\
CD2:=F:\CD2\
CD3:=F:\CD3\
CD4:=F:\CD4\
CD5:=F:\CD5\
and you can just change the drive letter to whatever you want, and that will be the new drive.
