I have played the Quake3 test demo and I just got my hands on a full cracked Unteal tourny cd (614mb to install http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif ) In my opinion UT in far suppieriour to quake3. The images and skins of other players are less cartoony and the graphics offer more realism. Maybe the full version of Qauke3 will be different. Well guy's thats my opinion whats yours?
I agree, UT is far superior because it's a re-write rather than a re-hash. All players/bots get a chance to play well because the weapons are more balanced and available - you can't just dominate the railgun or whatever.
For one (of many) comparisons try the review here (who conveniently agrees with my view http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif):

Oh, and please quit whining about 600MB installs when you haven't paid for the thing. Don't post info like that if you don't want to be berrated for it. My sincere apologies if that's not what you mean by "cracked". I agree that games are generally overpriced on release, but programmers, distributors, etc, work for a living like most other people.
UT really is worth paying for if you enjoy FPS.

Personally, I prefer Quake3 for it's speed. UT pisses me off because they don't directly support TNT chipsets.
I really like UT, however, for everything else - it's an excellent game; just slower.

Q3 is good, but it's still along the vein of Q2. Seems a bit "arcade or cartoon-like", especially in the menus, but it was designed to be that way. Still got the reddish/brown
graphics with the required "satanic" overtones. UT just feels "new", and the secondary weapon modes are nice! I got them both and could be happy with either one really, but I'd pick up UT first if I started over with neither one. Good review here: http://www.maximum3d.com/q3vsut.htm

Hmm...
UT: Cool graphics, lots of game modes, player skins rock, great speed and performance, but trouble with OpenGL and a bit loose on Direct3D.
Quake3: cool weapons, cool maps and player models, but sometimes slugghish net performance and general game slowdowns.

I find Quake 3 to be even more cartoony than Quake 2. They have just added some cool effects (Bullets spark when they hit walls). Unreal tourny is to slightly cartoony but not near to the extent of Quake 2. By the way the most expensive I have seen Quake 3 go to is $70 U.S. HAHAHAHA like anyone would buy it for that much, don't you agree.

I have full version of both games. Yeah, I got money to waste!! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
I have to agree mostly with Pantion!! They are also more curves in those Quake chicks and more on the levels, too, than UT!! UT is better on my FPS with more varieties on game modes, which are better on game play!!
Honestly, I love both of them!! I think Quake mods will come alone and change most of the short coming as it did before!!
I'm UT fan. Q3 just seams un-inspired to me....there's not as much to it, and I think people will get bored of it more quickly. I CAN'T belive they missed out on secondary fire mode...that's a HUGE miss in my opinion. I though that was a standard in games now-a-days (got to love sniper mode). Ha, I was quite dissapointed when I pushed the right mouse button...and got gibbed instead. But moveing on. I find the Q3 levels nicer looking but more simple...and thus quickly boreing. I'm torn on which one has more realistic bots...but I think UT's look a lot nicer...though I wish had more varity.
Overall it seams like the q3 team spent too much time on looks and and not enough on gameplay and the fun factor.

I haven't played Q3, but I have tried Q2 and Halflife and UT is by far the best game I have EVER played. I have a viper770 ultra and it plays great in D3D. It is not slow whatsoever at 1024X768 16 bit all options on.
Usually 45-55 fps.

I don't know.. there's something about crouching in a dark corner in UT and zooming the M16 scope in on your enemy and POW! "Headshot!" The headless body quivers for a second and keels over. LOL! Good fun!
The progressive zoom (6x,8x,10x,etc.)gives great flexibility over distances, allowing you to track a moving target. No offense to Q3 railgunners, but this rocks!

Q3 has better eye candy (WOW!) but UT has better gameplay. UT!!!!
Is that a sarcastic post alpha?
UT has much more graphic detail, and it's gameplay is slightly unresponsive and slower than Q3! Sorry, but I don't cower down in a corner to snipe! I usually bust out of the sky from a rocket jump and incinerate the sniper with a rail gun strike to the head from flying away at an angle... Something you can't do very well in UT.

UT has a lot of gameplay features I like, but that hack of a rendering engine they used just does not cut it for me. Barely supports D3D, does not correctly support OpenGL, but it loves Glide. Heh. Not a 3dfx fan if you can't tell. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
Q3A is smoother, more detailed, and just downright prettier to look at. If you have not seen the level with fog all through it, you have not seen the beauty. I do wish Q3A had all the bot control features that UT has available. I especially like being able to dynamically spawn/kick bots to keep a server full and the control over their play style. The Q3A bots are pretty much just there. They are **** good some of them, but not because of anything you can really tweak.
Q3A gets my vote, but UT is really a good game too. The perfect game is still somewhere in the middle of the two. Full bot control/tweaks, rock solid renderer in all modes, clear water, and dense fog, it is coming someday.

Before today I wouldnt have bet anything could be more fun than playing quake 3 on a college lan.
Then I downloaded the UT demo.
Hands down, much much better than Q3A. I fired it up from the get go with about 16 bots and went at it. Maybe it was just the new weapons (that can fire in multiple modes)the dif character animations, the trashtalking, or the overalll smoothness of it ( at least on my machine), but its just more fun than quake 3. I might actually go buy this one.

800XL, What do you mean? UT does or does not have autobots like Q3a? My Q3A bots will dynamically spawn or get kicked. I have them set for a minimun of 3 players. As soon as someone else joins in, a bot dies...someone quits the bot joins, all automatically.

BBA: Really? I have not seen how to do it. Part of the problem I guess. The dedicated server setup portion is UT is so easy to work with. Can you have say, an 8 player server stay always full and still have a new player connect kick a bot or do you have to maintain an open slot? I'll have to do some more research once I get around to setting up a dedicated server on Linux again.
UT is nice game. I'm personally very glad that ID has some competition that is showing itself to be credible. Once the mods, skins, levels, models, and other Quake3Arena customizations start flowing in mass, I think it will be forgotten though.

I have both games and I have to go with Quake 3. The engine is smoother and runs so sweet over my modem. UT engine is basically the same as the original unreal engine running best on the soon to be outdated glide. In Q3 I like variety of models to choose from unlike UT where there is really only two 3 types. I'm pretty sick of seeing the same models running around while playing single or multiplayer in UT. The weapons in Q3 are more well balanced than UT weapons in my opinion. Also why do the models in UT only hold their weapons in one? Not really realistic if you ask me. As for the levels Quake3 has more wide spacious levels than UT while UT has more variety of levels. I don't know about you but in UT I tend feel claustrophobic in a lot of areas when I playing. I feel like I don't have a lot of room to move around. Overall both games are fun, but I gotta go with Quake 3 with the fast pace deathmatch and replay value. After playing through all the levels and modes in UT I don't want to go back to them.

To be honest, I liked Q3 and thought it was the best thing to hit the market since chop liver. Until UT stopped by. UT plays better and plays on the internet alot easier. You can have a real high ping and it still plays great. The coolest graphics I ever saw and yes I have a voodoo 3. I have both games which I payed less the 50 bucks total. Used my Value dollars and have not played Q3 since it arrived 3 weeks ago. Not to say Q3 is not a great game but it just seems like a cartoon to me and I only say that because now I have something to compare it with.

I've noticed that a large portion of the UT fans are also 3dfx fans. Q3A is not as stunning on a Voodoo card, and UT is not as stunning on your average OpenGL card. UT looks like a bad Voltron clone on my ATI Rage128 card, but Q3A looks **** fine. Q3A's texture detail and shading all comes shining through, and UT was lackluster beside it. (Not to mention performing like a dog compared to Q3A's smooth play even at 1024x768, not bad for a 16MB ATI card) I'll give UT some credit, they coded for Glide very well. Of course to me that is sorta like saying a game plays great under DOS these days.

Sounds to me like UT and Q3 (Which is better) is a very controversial topic http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif I got both games now and like them the same.
P.S. It's always nice to post a new topic and get such a large number of responses http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Personally, for me, its UT. I am not a huge Deathmatch fan, so the Assault and Domination are good for me requiring more teamwork which is more my cup of tea.

Well my opinion is basically favored by the flavor. Q3 is the fast paced high quality- effects multiplayer fragfest. Admittedly, with a Geforce card, this is the game I have been playing the most. UT on the otherhand, has a more realistic undertone and is great for it's insta-gib mod and totally different games. The basis of my thesis; deathmatch Q3 owns. CTF, last man standing, Assault, UT is the place to be. Garnish the game with Insta-gib and have fun! Basically comparing these two games are like comparing apples to oranges. Buy both or regret it.

I think that many people in general forget what Q3's all about. Deathmatch. It does DM and it does it better than anyone else. Thats all it was meant to do. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Thats the problem, its mindless with one goal. Part of the reason that Half life - TFC is so high on my list. My friends and I had a much funner time playing Unreal Demo than Q3test...ALOT more. (we had the most fun with TFC 4 player hunted, but lets not change the subject http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif)
