Hey i was interested in buying a celeron with 400mhz and i was wondering if anyone out there has one and plays with it. mostly games like half-life, rainbow six, and quake III. i was wondering if the celeron plays smooth or should i just go for a pentuim II?

get the celeron, then overclock it!

I have a Celeron 400ppga and it runs those games plus more....Unreal Tournament is a blast.
Make sure you have the ram to back it up, I picked up 128mb pc100 ram and it runs great.

Just make sure you get a good video card too, and everything will fly! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Get the celeron, overclock it if you can, and be sure to have at least 128 megs of ram and you'll laugh at the pentium

Oh ya, I am also running a V770 TNT2 vid card with my C400/128mb.

Great combo.

I will admit that celeron processors are good if you are on a buget. However they will NEVER be better that Pentium II, III proccessors. Celeron are an example of a poor mans cpu. Pentium II, III cpus can run many more things at the same time and remember that jurky mouse pointer when a big application is loading (Pentium 1 cpu's), my P3 chip never lets this happen even with 64mb ram. Celeron chips are all fine and dandy if the rest of your components are good. Noone can say "Celeron" chips are better than P3 or 2 chips in any respect.

The previous post are a result of a CHEAP *** SCHOOL SERVER and dumassed techs who are supposed keep it running good but don't know how to plug in a freakin key board!!!

Poor man you say?
More like Budget-concious!

I would not agree with your statement as celeron being a poor mans CPU.

Lets see
A cel 366's (majority OC to 550) low price on www.pricwatch.com (http://www.pricwatch.com) is 37 dollars, and 17 bucks for a FDP32 w/ fan to get it there, and a 15 dollar slocket to make it fit - Total $64

A PIII 450 (majority OC to 558) low price on www.pricwatch.com (http://www.pricwatch.com) is $190, and $50 for an alpha P3125 w/ 2 fans to get it there - Total $240

...174 more dollars for 4x as much slower L2, SSE, and 8 Mhz?
just a bit steep eh?

UUUUhhmmmm...NO First of all I wasn't talking about overclocking. I feel overclocking is stupid and besides it voids your warrenty and reduces cpu life span. I know I know. You think that you will not have it for very long anyway before you upgrade, well you probley also know that oc'ing is hard on other components of an oc'ed system. Pentium II,III cpu's may not be cheap but you can't sit there and tell me celeron is of high quality.

I take the opposing opinion that a factory set-up is soft on your components. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
I have a genetic predisposition towards getting the best for my money.
I could have a dual oc/ed Celeron system for less than a PIII of equivalent power, and still have change for a spare CPU if I broke one.
The 512K cache may be more suited for business, video and programming uses, but the man in the street is happy with the second-hand tuned-up stationwagon instead of the showroom-gloss Mercedes. It gets the kids in the back, gets from A to B easily, and the insurance is cheap.
The advances in video, sound and other accelerated cards have also narrowed the gap between the two CPUs and its importance (or lack thereof) to the average user.
A Celeron 400+, SB Live, and Voodoo 3 or TNT2U is a pretty potent and inexpensive option.

Just my 0.02p

If you get a 400 MHz Celeron right now you will want to upgrade to a faster CPU in 6 months from now. Go for at least a 500 MHz Celeron right now. A P3 500 is only slightly faster in most things than a Celeron 500 because the Celeron only uses 66 Mhz bus and P3 uses 100 Mhz. Only in Quake 3 the P3 500 is nearly twice as fast as a Celeron 500 because of the P3's SSE instructions.

I have a Celeron 400 and I have it running at 500 (6*83) with an FDP32 @ 27-30 celcius.
This thing runs all my games great, Unreal at 1024*768, UT the same, Q3A 800*600 and the frame rates are silky smooth. If I were you I would go with the 366, it runs 50mhz faster with a 100mhz FSB which is MUCH better than my 83mhz FSB.

Anyway Just go with a celery 366 or 400, overclock it and you'll be happy.
