This may come as a bit of a shock to some people who have been playing online since the 80's, but I've never. Couple of friends and I want to hook up on the net and play some Starcraft (to get things started, we'll experiment with Quake and stuff later). How do we do this? Geographically, I'm in Baton Rouge, Ryan is in Houston, and Brad is in Dallas. What's the easiest and preferably free way for us to get started. I hear that I need battlenet, but I don't know what it is.

start up the game, and click on multiplayer. then a screen will come up with different options for multiplay games - like thru a network, and battlenet. click on battlenet (i dont remember if you have to connect to the internet first, or this does it for you...) and the game will log into battlenet. it will ask you to set up a username/password that you will use to log into battlenet. then, you can create a private game if you want to play with your friends, and then just give them the name and password for the game you create and they can connect into your game.

Sounds simple enough. We're going to try it ASAP. Thanks!

Howdy Hyper,
Glad to see you finally joining the BBS. Hyper and I are interested in the same thing. Getting to play Starcraft against each other. Any additional help would be appreciated.

Bnet is the simplest way to get on and play
Just when you get in, and your sure both of you are logged on, meet eachother in a channel or something and get a game started
the command for messaging people on bnet is '/msg <username> <message>'
so lets say you wanted to message me with a message to meet you in channel scourge
just type
/msg AuraEdge Come to channel scourge
and then I could make my way there.
after you get that done, and you meet on Bnet, it shouldnt be too much trouble starting a game.
while in bnet and they will get the message
Im not sure if you can make a direct IPX connection, but if you can, it would be through that setting (although intended for LAN play). Im not sure if it will work over the internet.

Is there a way to get starcraft to connect directly to an IP? I mean, can i select multiplayer, type in my opponent's IP, and play a game with them?
