Where do you get the Windows Registry Cleaner? I can't find it on the Win98 CD. Someone told me you could D\L it from the Microsoft site. I couldn't find it. I did a download-product and article search-Nada.

Maybe it's only available for W95?

If you are referring to the Diskcleaner, it is one of the system tools utilities. You can find it when you install/setup (Add/Remove Software) at the Control Panel. Good luck!

Thank you Antonio http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif-No there is a run command-REGCLEAN that starts a registry cleaner utility-I don't have it-Just wondering who does.

I think regclean is for Win95 only. Atleast I haven't seen it for Win98 yet.

I downloaded the Microsoft Regclean program a while back from somewhere. Just this week, I had a clients Win98 system that needed to be optimized as much as possible.

It didn't say what windows it was for. So I tryed it out, and it messed the system bad.

So try it at your own risk and thank God for Scanreg.

Usually I would post it on my ftp server. But I haven't set the filters to allow access through my firewall yet. If you still want a copy of it. Email me.

Try cleansweep 4.0.

I use Cleansweep 95 (maybe I'll upgrade someday). In the registry section, it shows red, yellow and green "lights" to advise about deletion. I take out the greens now and then, but I haven't the courage to go any farther. All the cleanup really seems to do is make booting a bit quicker. At 526MHz, everything else is quick enough anyway. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I have RegClean.exe on my desktop and have never had a problem after using it. It states that it does not repair the registry, just cleans out the cobbwebs(something like that) I think I downloaded it from Microsoft. "Find" command did not find it on Win98 CD. Good Luck http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Roy thank you for the links. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Just a quick question though-How useful is a utility like Regsav from Webersoft,
www.computing.net\software97 (http://www.computing.net\software97) when windows98 automatically backs the registry up at every boot? Just wondering if it does more. The description says the registry is restored from a batch file. I know the windows backups are in cabs.

Don't bother with 3rd party reg backup stuff if you've got 98. The reg backups are available in DOS, and are not .cab files.
Do not run RegClean95 with Windows 98 it's not compatible, and can screw things up royally. Then you will need to reinstall the old reg backup.
Cheers, Jim

Thank you Reboot- http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif What I did do was edit the scanreg.ini file and change the default number of backups from 5 to 7-Just in case the need ever arises. I feel a little more secure now.

Hmm ,I found this bit about Regclean-interesting.

RegClean
This utility cleans your registry of unnecessary entries that were created when you installed or uninstalled programs on your computer. This release of the utility fixes a few problems and creates an "undo.reg" file so that you can undo the changes you inadvertently make to your system registry. Note: This program is no longer supported by Microsoft and will not function if Internet Explorer 5 is installed.

hmm interesting StarWatcher... I wonder if there's one that DOES work w/IE5.0? Beginning to like the idea of RegClean, since it IS time consuming hunting & pecking thru my Registry everytime I want to "clean it out" - which is often!

Hi StarWatcher! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Well I finally got to your link - have you tried EasyCleaner yet? Give us your opinion. Have you found anything other regcleaner that looks good?

I think I'll start a search mission for any/all registry cleaners, then compare first. Thanks for the link tho, I have TopFile bookmarked.

Too bad Gentle Giant's link to RegClean doesn't work with IE5.0/Win98. That sounds like the ticket if it did. Thanks for that info Gentle Giant.

The MS site says that the MS RegCleaner is for win98 - but it has to be the recent release.
I di try it - it said it was going to repair something - I let it and everything seems OK. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
This release also has an undo, as some of you may know the WIN95 RegCleaner did'nt.

I was getting ready to disagree with you Gentle Giant, but decided to take another look at the link. I'm glad I did, you are absolutely right, it does say IE 5.0 for Win98! Somehow I missed that line last night. Looks like I'll be downloading that RegClean after all. Thanks! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

~edit

From Gentle Giant's link, d/l'd, installed & ran once . Took out a slew of entries and created the Undo file. So many I don't know what they are... but will keep that Undo for awhile just to be sure. Everything seems to be ok otherwise.

Well, thanks GentleGiant http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif I d\l Regclean from your link and it worked fine. I missed that it worked with IE5 when I first read it too.

It's a good little utility to have around. I'll post if it gives me any problems

Hmmm… Interesting. I grabbed both the MS reg cleaner and Easycleaner. The MS cleaner found and repaired a large group of errors. Then, just for kicks and giggles I ran Easycleaner and it found 193 more Errors to clean, all on MS products. I guess the MS cleaner doesn’t kill it’s own. This was on a win 98 machine with IE5
