for 1st person shooters, who uses something either than a mouse? what are the pros and cons? I have a couple wacky friends who swear by inverted y-axis on their mouse when playing 1st person shooters? do lots of people? i hate it

I hear it's quite a learning curve with the dual strike, so prepare to get shellacked for a few days. I play keyboard with inverted mouse as well, probably because I fly sims with a joystick. Speaking of which, joysticks don't have a variable turn rate like a mouse does, which makes it virtually impossible to spin on your heels and fire running backwards then spin forward again in FPS games.

Inverted mouse + Keyboard also. Feels very natural and fast.
Usual config for FPS and some "semi-SIM" games like Forsaken, BattleZone, etc.
w = forward
s = backward
a = straft left
d = straft right
c = duck
e = swim/hover/pitch up
x = swim/hover/pitch down
space bar = use/activate item
fire = left mouse button
alt fire = mid mouse button, "block" for Thief
jump = right mouse button
misc.
r = reload
h = holster
f = flashlight or equivalent
[ = prev. item
] = next item
Seems to work well for me in 90% of all my action games.
Game option is set to "always run", of course.
