Try zonealarm which is a firewall and can make you invisible to other people. www.zonelabs.com (http://www.zonelabs.com)

Go to www.grc.com (http://www.grc.com) and let the site analyze your system. The grc site has many recommendations for configurations and firewalls. Personally I use Zone Alarm and Cookie Pal to give me some security.

Greetings, warthog2446!

You are the very first person with "warthog" in your name that I have ever seen on the internet. Welcome to Sysopt. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Hey warthog2446, i think warthog likes your name http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I also use Zone Alarm. I also have been to www.grc.com (http://www.grc.com) and i think it's a great site. It offers a lot of info on how to set up your network protocols correctly to give you some protection from the internet. Then of course you can download zone alarm. It's simple to set up and it's free!

I just went back to test my shields against their servers and they could not get in. It says that my computer is very secure and is running in complete stealth mode thanks to alarm zone and proper protocol settings. I tried it out last week and i did bad. Did a little reading and here i am. Try it out and read there articles on setting up the protocols.

None of the above will make you invisible. ZA will still allow your IP address to be seen. It will hide you ports, mac address(if you have a NIC), user name, etc..

What is the worry over being invisible on the net? I really don't care if someone knows that I went to www.sysopt.com, (http://www.sysopt.com,) or if someone else knows that I typed in linux at a search engine. It's not like they are tracking you specifically, there are millions of other people that they take marketing information and things on too. I don't consider it any different if they know I shopped at Amazon.com than if my bank knows I wrote a check at Kroger. Any one tell me why its such a big deal? Is their something I don't know?

I have to agree, Zone Alarm for me is the best free solution to protecting your coomputer from online intruders. There are other firewalls that are superior of course, but their prices are also superior!! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Steve Gibson is an intelligent man, he's done his research on developing new programs to help people like me, he's also creating his own firewall like Zone Alarm and will be offering it soon. Check out his site if you haven't already, http://www.grc.com

The only way to do that that I know of is to use one of the anonymizing portals like the one posted above. I have never used one and don't knwo much about them (speed decrease?) but they seem to be fairly popular.

One way you can hide your ip while on the web is to go through an anonymous proxy server. Unfortunately my knowledge about them is little. I know there are some free ones you can use though. I think I might have some URLs at home somewhere... will post em later...

Pepto is right...do a search for proxy servers and start trying various ones...beware though, some don't take kindly to your using them. You can set the proxy right in your browser in Internet options in IE or preferences/advanced/proxies, in NS.
Some proxies speed up your connection, some hide you, some do both, but watch out for proxies that "leak" who you are if that is what you are after. Nothing is better than reading on this subject, as it really isn't something you can master from one post.
Good luck
