i had too many problems until i can get my card to work properly. I still have some crashes, and BLUE screens of death, why? No conflicts.. no bad system files... is it cuz of the videocard heat? my CPU is not overclocked, as my 380 was a failure, so everything is factory settings.

I have the same card, and my PIII 450 is running at 504Mhz, and no such problems.

The only problems I had initially were seating the card properly, or perhaps dust in the slot. I was getting three POST beeps (no video). I re-seated the card and everything was OK. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

What version drivers are you using? Several people are having problems with the latest beta versions, but the last retail release seems to be stable for them.

As for heat, the v3 is a very HOT chipset. I would recommend installing atleast a 486 fan on its heatsink. If you have good case cooling, attempt to direct the air flow to the card.

Good Luck,

Rob do u recommend putting a 486heatsink and fan on the chip or just putting a fan on the stock hs? Also what would be the best way to mount the fan on the hs. I have a 486 fan but the screws dont fit on the hs. Also where can I get whatever compound you will refer me? Thanks.

I just added the fan to the sink that was on it as the stocker is very hard to get off
use a pair of pliers and bend the fins in at the corners and then the fan screws will catch http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

You just need to put the fan on the factory heatsink. Most fans won't line up, but there's a simple trick:

-Place screws through fan holes.
-Wrap screw ends in electrical tape to make them larger
-Try sliding the oversized screws into the heatsink fins
-Keep applying layers of tape until the screws will hold in the heatsink firmly

When I ran my v3 3000 AGP, I cooled it with two 486 fans without any problem. 3dfx usually includes large enough heatsinks, but I never understood why they didn't include a fan on the v3 2000's and 3000's.

Good Luck,

I agree, RobRich - I just didn't like how hot my V3 3000 was getting, so I removed the HS and the thermal pad, used paste and epoxied a little CPU fan to the HS.

Couple or three points: the HS is hard to remove 'cos of the sticky pad they use on the 3000. You will likely lose a PCI slot 'cos of the space the fan take up. It works really well when you make the mod http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I didn't have any problems with my new Voodoo3 3000 AGP card at all. But I am a bit anxious on how hot the card is getting! Wonder how hot the Voodoo5 6000 AGP would be, it may be hot or normal! Wish it doesn't have a intel 1Ghz fan on it! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I run the Voodoo3 2000 AGP on a TMC TI5VGA mobo and it's totally stable unless I clock my K62 500 to 550! Then I get frame drop out and it boots me back to the desktop. I use the latest cert drivers from 3DFX and i've fitted a 486 fan to the cards heatsink.

WW, the 3dfx v5 6000 actually has four decent sized fans on it. I know of one person that received their v5500 test board, and could get any apps to run, nor achieve a stable system. It turned out that one fan was dead, and the one of VSA-100 chips was literaly frying itself. I believe 3dfx learned form their v3 cooling mistakes, and hopefully get it right this time. Added cooling is also one of the reasons for the v5 requiring an alternate power souce.
