Not all is lost, yet. I know of a group that is trying to liscense the O/S-2 source code for futher development as a consumer OS. I actually like O/S-2, and still install Warp 3.0 on older systems that just wan't handle NT effiecently. In a server or workstation enviroment, it is far supoerior to Win9x for common tasks.

IBM lost interst in selling it on the consumer market, as it would require massive amounts of technical support. Ever since IBM's network development department gained control of the project, they only wanted to market it to their corporate customers (legacy support issues). One development member was quoted as saying, "I would rather a person run Windows 95 on a Compaq, than to support an end-user running O/S-2 on a IBM Thinkpad." This was during an interview on why O/S-2 was going completely commercial. IBM staed that just don't have the resources, nor the want, to support O/S-2 users.

But I thought this source license thingy was a no-go, as it contains a lot of code licensed from other people that IBM couldn't release?

It was also killed at version 4.0 quite a few years ago, and then IBM brought out the latest server/client version...kinda makes you wonder...

They were mostly interest in obtaining the kernel core, as this is completely IBM's code. They wanted to sell the new OS in the same manner as early Linux releases, where they provide stable core, and end users integrate the applications and support for new hardware.
