I thought you had already done it before http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/006422.html

I know you get the option to select the directory during the instalation but I think Partition Magic 5 which has a thing called magic mover may be able to do it.

If you just want to rename, boot to command prompt and use move command. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Actually, you'd wanna boot w/ a start disk first, then move it so you're not using system files within the windows directory. Check the autoexec.bat & config.sys if you choose this route.

remember .. if you rename the windows directory you'll also need to edit your MSDOS.SYS file so that it knows where to point when it tries to boot the OS.

folk it dont work!!!
I already tried it
windows booted up
missing files etc.
you're pretty much stuck with what ever name you gave it unless you format it and
reinstall from scratch again.

Win_98,
It can be done, but its sorta painfull. I did it twice (once from c:/windows to something, then back a while later). I did it under WIN3.11 but it should work for 95/98. The trick is once you move the directory, you need to go into the registry and all the system files like win.ini, .... and change all the "c:/window" statements to d:/newname or whatever you called it.

Be warned, there are a lot of places the c:/windows shows up, and I never got it 100% right until I finally moved the directory back to normal, and installed 95. Good luck if you try it.
