I'm looking to grab and older system cheap (<$400). It seems my choices are either pentium 2's in the 300-450 MHZ range or the AMD k6-2's in the same speed range. I'm not that familiar with the K6-2's. Are they on par with a Pentium 2? Is there a version or ID type I should look for if I get a K6-2?

Anythoughts aould help.

I would rather not say this, since I am very pro Amd, but you'd do best to get a PII!!!

It has a superior FPU over the k6-2 and seems to be overall more powerfull then the k6-2!!!

But, ya can always get an athlon??!!!
Look at www.pricewatch.com (http://www.pricewatch.com)

Ya might like the prices and deside to go athlon!!!

I checked out some systems from price watch. Athalon 650's for just over $600. Far from a killer system, but not too bad either. That made me wonder, how does a Celeron in the same 300-450 MHZ price range compare to the P2? I beleive they are close, but I'm not sure.

If you can get a celeron in those ranges go for it. They beat out the K6-2 and the PII hands down.

I have a celeron 366 and it beats out a friends PII 400 all the time. As for over clocking had it to 550 stable till it started getting hot. So I shut it down and went back to 366 (No extra cooling other than the stock fan it came with.) Once I have a proper heat sink and better fan then that is where it will be all the time.

The reason I like the celeron is better is the on die cache that runs at FULL clock speed rather than at 1/2 clock speed.
