I was just curious(yeah right)about those free download programs that function only for a specified period and then cease to function after that trial period has ended. Do they bury some file deep in the OS that detects the install date? Does the OS clock create a file within the installed program? Is there something deeply buried in the system registry?

Can anyone do their homework on this one?

it is usually in the registry..........

look for regcleaner here http://www.saunalahti.fi/jv16/ it is a nice program that can remove unwanted registry entrys by software titlte.....I actually use after I uninstall something to clean out the registry..........................seriously it can be used for alot of things........you basically remove the registry entrys that are not installed any more so you have a cleaner registry.

Sometimes the install date is stored in a data file, sometimes something is kept in the registry (hidden pretty well usually). Cracks can be had, but shareware authors work hard and deserve to be paid. Shareware is cheap too, buy it.

There is a txt file in c:\window\aplog

there are listings elsewhere.

there also is a way to delete that is deleted from the FAT as well.
bcwipe comes to mind.

I had to try this stuff on someones box that had gone to unsavory places for software.
the time spent on repairing the damage was absolutely not worth what ever the person was attempting to save by going to the "unsavory place"

If I'd a charged em what it was worth to fix it, the software they wanted would've been MUCH cheaper.
it was good learning experiance for me- to go through once.

To get all yur thigns to work indefinitly, I reccomend this:

Open My computer;
Go to C: drive;
Delete the C:/Windows folder, it is unnecesary.......
