My friends sick of running on his HP p133. Hes got 500 bucks. He doesnt need a new monitor or harddrive. Any recommends?
Im told him to get 64ram, some class of celeron chip, Abit BH6 or Bx6-2 (20-30 bucks can be a huge diff when u got little money to work with) and a vanilla ATX case, with a v3 2000 AGP (cuz the suckers nice n cheap), and a SB AWE64 or someother not-top-line-but-good soundcard.
Is a OEM 16MB TNT2 better than a V3 2000?
Lemme put that all together
64ram -------------------$70?
BH6----------------------$90
Case---------------------$50
V3 2000 or 16MB TNT2-----$120
SB AWE64--------Guessin ~$50
Celeron xxx -------------however much is left ($120 as of now)
Id go for 300a like any decent overclocker probably if i could get it

I'd do it like this -

MicroStar MS-6163 -- $92
64MB CL2 SDRAM ---- $39
Case ---------------- $40
Shark Mako 64 sound -$14

After tax and/or shipping, that leaves almost $300 for Vid Card and Processor. I'm just getting ready to study the reviews on the new vids, before they came out, the Asus TNT was my choice. Now? I don't yet know. Both TNT2 and VooDoo3 are very promising. A lot depends on how they are implemented by the card manufacturers.

A C300a certainly is a sensible way to get started.

I like to shop at www.pricewatch.com (http://www.pricewatch.com) There's a review of the MS-6163 at www.thetechzone.com (http://www.thetechzone.com)

Roy's suggested recommendation sure is a money saver. As mentioned, it leaves enough for where it counts. I would be slightly weary of the sound card's overall driver compatibility with games. If that's something your friend has a passion for. As I said, going with the rest of Roy's suggestion will leave room for a better sound card. Such as CL's 4-channel PCI512 can be found for $45 and Diamond's MX300 for $52. That still leaves little over $280 for the CPU and vidcard.

Abit BX6-2 ~ $100
or
Asus P2B-F ~ $115
C366 ~ $75
128MB PC100 RAM ~ $80
Voodoo 3 2000 AGP ~ $95
ATX Case ~ $30

Total ~ $400

--All these prices are from www.pricewatch.com

With the C366 you're almost guarenteed to get 458Mhz. possibly 550 with extra cooling. Make sure you get the retail version if you want a chance at 550...

Hey.....he just told me hed rather not overclock....I wouldnt really feel comfortable clockin it and leavin and him tellin me two days later it wont boot up or sumthin anyways......So i guess i gotta shoot for at least a cel 400 now...
as for sound cards...where in the world are u gettin a diamond MX300 for sub 80 let alone 58 bucks!??
I mean what i configured in my first comp isnt really any different that what u put in all of yours..just the price for yours are way cheaper....
for example i put 64 ram as 70 bucks and Roy put it as 39....
And last time I got a sub 35 dollar case I got a shoddy power supply....
And I got my SBLiveValue for 79 bucks after shopping around about 3 months ago...are sound cards really that cheap now?
