I am asking this out of pure curiosity, not to be mislead for flaming.
I am just curious as to why this SETI crunching is such a big deal to some of you. I am a firm believer that there are forms of life that exist. But do you do it on an idea that maybe you will find some message from them?
Please explain to me why you are doing this.
Thanks

I think that there simply must be intelligent life elsewhere. But to actually hear or see a signal sent by an intelligent race several lightyears away would be an esperience to behold. And then to wonder how they may have changed or if they are still around when you get the signal. I think it would be a humbling experience. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

We have a radio signal pointed into the sky to anounce our prescence to other intelligent lifeforms . There are plaques on spacecraft describing us and what our solar system looks like. We have an lp record on Voyager, I think. We are hoping that other civilizations are doing the same kinds of things.

And not only that, I thought with my computer running all the time I could put it to good use. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Fresh ideas - the possibility of them.

Everything we see today is a copy or a shadow of something that's been done before.

The chance of us actually finding a signal with the resources we have today are fantastically remote.

Almost all of the "signals" researched to date resulted from a problem with the radio telescope in January of this year.

I'm also a firm believer that there is other life out there somewhere. The slightest chance of "hearing" from them is worth it. It would change the world forever. Hopefully for the good. Perhaps it would unite man-kind in one goal - perhaps it would rip the world appart as the fanatics attempt to enforce their view of what was received.

Regardless - it would be something new.

SETI is a worthwhile project, I think. However, without adequate funding for it, it has even slimmer chances of finding anything or anyone.

It's similar to a donation in my mind. I support the desire to find out what and who else is out there, here's some processing power. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
