A good friend of mine lives in LA and uses dial up (standard rig: $20 ISP, $35 dedicated line). I thought for $55 or so he could get Cable or DSL if it's available. Do any of you California ppl know if there are any providers in the area? DSL preferred...
edit That's $ per month, BTW.

Don't know about LA, but here in the Bay Area both cable and DSL are availible depending on your neighborhood. Cable is $39/mo. and usually a free setup and hardware. The DSL companies aren't so smart...they've been about $49/mo forever with setup fees AND for less speed than over cable! I think DSL is finally starting to come down closer to $39/mo. But it's still slower than cable...at least in my experience (I have DSL at work & cable at home) my cable connection is anywhere from slightly faster to way WAY faster than any DSL line I've been on.

I've used Pacbell DSL in Sausalito for the last 10 months. Has been flawless for the most part. Down about 3 days total (complete outage) with slowdowns or inability to access some sites or features (SMTP server down, etc.) a few more days. But all in all, very reliable, and fast.

I've switched between a few ISP's, and loosing your long term email addresses that you gave out to everyone can be a pain in the @ss.
What I reccomend for that is getting a cheap little general purpose domain name. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
Hopefully it would come in for a little more than email.
