I'm a chronic price watcher. Lately I've noticed ram dropping again.. Is it just me, or is it real. I posted some of my findings in "Steals and Deals" of course, I'm just musing if this is temporary or the start of a free-fall of prices. Maybe Rambus or some other technology is on the horizon about to make the present memory obsolete.. DrVette

Somebody said once that they've noticed a trend in RAM prices over the past few years. Prices tend to dip initially in March, rise a little then go for a big dip in late summer. Those seem to be the best times to buy. I remember last year, the lowest prices were around September (b/c thats when I bought).

Late summer last year prices doubled!!

However I may just be buying some more ram soon.

i think it's on the RAM itself. Some are being discontinued. Some RAMs are though going up in price, and some are going down. I think it's just on the company selling it, yah? http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

which would you buy
64meg, 128meg, or 256
and how low do you think it was to be?
say 30 buck for 64
60 for 128
120 fo 256
it would be a steal wouldnt it?

Ok maybe it was late summer. But I distinctly remember the price being $85 for 128MB of RAM. It's just barely that low right now. Then I remember a few things happening, earthquake in Taiwan or something that drove the price up really high really fast.

Yeah! That's right. I remember that someone told me about that stupid earthquake back then. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Just wish that Rambus would go down in price.

Yeah, I hope Rambus goes down soon, too. Their competition: SDRAM-DDR is still high also.
Although I still have only 160MB PC-100, I'm thinking of upgrading my system to an Athlon-based MB and CPU, as well as PC-133 RAM.
The prices of PC-133 will drop too, once RDRAM drops.

hehe took 2 week to ship it thought
just imagine 128meg for 50 buck
256 meg for 100
512 for 200
then 128 for 25
256 for 50

The links provided in Steals and Deals for "other systems" RAM has Crucial and PNY for prices at or lower than the ones you've posted here. Buy.com is a OK place, just make sure it is in stock, not on order or especially not on backorder.. DrVette

Back last year, late June or early july was when it bottomed out. I picked up a couple PC100 128 mb dimms for $69.95 each. I still have the receipt..I was sooo proud. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Then in August or September the Earthquake struck, and there was a time when you couldn't get a 128 for less than $200. It was crazy! I think best buy was the cheapest around, because they were so high during the cheap months, they still had alot of stock left. That doesn't mean I bought it from them though. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I think the earthquake was mid-July. ANyway the ram prices are still not as low as they were before it.

When I do buy more ram it will be HSDram not SDram, it oc's better.

Btw I will be buying 2 sticks of 128MB

I personally am waiting until just before the next big earthquake. Anyone know when that will be? http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

Wait!!! Let me clarify something. I bought my 128 RAM for $180 after the quake. BUT that was the UPGRADE price from Dell because I had bought a computer from them less than a month before.

I lucked out, I guess. He said they were around $300 for full price (like you guys said).
