I just got my new plextor 8x4x32.....and then I made 5 coasters in a row........I am using adaptec easy cd creator and I am trying to copy a backup of my win98 se that came with my last computer...........anyways I am getting buffer underruns and a couple of other errors.......I have bothmy cdrom and my cdrw on the second IDE channel with the cdrw set to "master"...I have tried using great maxell 8x media and I have tried some other 8x media.........I have even tried doing this at 4x write speed.......I have DMA enabled on all drives........I am at a loss..............should I put the cdrw on the primary IDE channel set to slave? Is the secondary IDE not providing enough bandwidth to copy from the cdrom to the HDD then back to the cdrw? any helpwould be most appreciated.

If it copies to hard drive 1st and then from hard drive (on primary channel) to CDRW (on secondary) then that sounds pretty safe to me.

The DMA part though, if you force DMA on a device that doesn't really support it in win98, it can cause errors. I was getting read errors on my CD-ROM till I turned off DMA (at the suggestion of Dell Tech Support).

Try downloading cacheman and set it to the burner setting and copy the win98 cd to the hdd and then burn it back to a cd http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Hey Oblivion: Are you sure that you set the CD Rom to "Slave" on the secondary IDE???
Just checked my Philips installation guide and that's how they said to set it up. Hope this helps. Check all the conections with the computer unpluged( I'm sure you know that but doesn't hurt to say so) Maybe missed a pin or something.... Good luck http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

the pickel

Just read HD581's post..My wife's Cdrom wouldn't play music CD's but Data worked fine. Unchecked DMA in CD rom properties and all was fine . A good suggestion!!!

I'm sure that you have "been there done that" but it can't hurt to mention that adaptec has some patches on their website for ez cd creator. http://www.adaptec.com/support/advisor/cdrupdates/index.html
You should check plextor for any bios updates & patches.
You might want to make sure that anti virus software is disabled while you are burning and that cpu intensive things like rc5 and seti are not running.

Hmm...........I do have my burner as "master"
on the secondary IDE channel.....along with my cdrom as slave on secondary channel.........as far as copying the cd to my HDD and then burning it for the HDD desktop to the burner.........I did that with a backup game I was making...and it did not work...I told my frined about it and he said this

"When you put it on the desktop you are creating a data CD.
You need to copy the cd or create an image to burn from in order to get the tabke of contents from the original CD"

Is this true?
I have DMA enabled on my cdrom..maybe it should not be......plextor says DMA needs to be enabled for optimal performance on the CDRW............so it is.......I do not want to make any more coasters...........any more tips would be nice!!!!!!

ps asus say that DMA should be enabled with the cdrom(it is asus 50x).....should I just use windows dma...or use the asus driver to set it?

Oblivion when you co into cd copier set the source as your burner and set the destination as the burner. There should be a second tab which gives the option to copy to the hdd which is as an image file which is an exact copy of the disk http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif.

Try this......

Set the CD-Rom as the Master on the secondary channel. the CD-RW as the Slave.
Disable DMA on both items. Also disable sync data transfer. Then shut down all proggys that you don't need. I shut everything off except for Explorer, Systray, and Direct CD. Also turn off your screen saver.

I do this before i burn and don't have any problems. If I leave DMA enabled with my HP Burner, then i run into problems.

hey what is this second tab to copy exact image to the HDD you are talking about....should I just set the source and destination to the burner and foghettabotit?

navydood,I will try disabling DMA on both drives if I make one more coaster.......but the plextor manuel specifically says that it needs to be enabled, and set to master(cdrw)

I would use the burner to burn an image to the hdd(use the second tab) and then when it is done reading take the disk out and pop in a blank one and it will then burn from the hdd back to the disk http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif. Dont use a normal cd-rom as a reader if you can help it.

In cd copier set the source and destination as your burner and in the advanced tab tick the box for copy to hdd and you should be set. I just opened it up and had a look that explains the edit http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif.

First things first.

Check for EasyCD software updates and update as necessary. http://www.adaptec.com/support/advisor/cdrupdates/index.html

Address the errors. The only one you mention is Buffer Underruns. This rarely occurs in EasyCd and is non-existent in DirectCD.

The nature of these buffer errors are interruptions in the flow of data going to the recorder emptying out the buffer and the writing of the data actually halts, resulting in a coaster.

The cause is usually something to do with the hard drive. The use of hard drives that are compressed are not recommended. Severly fragmented drives can be the cause of underruns as well as not enough space in the temporary directory. A old hard drive can also be the cause. Adaptec explains it nicely and offers possible resolutions to the problem. http://www.adaptec.com/support/faqs/bufunder.html

You pointed out other errors occuring but didn't mention what they are...

I am a foolio.......I was using the easy cd creator and going into "data cd"....I just used "CD copier" and wrote the image to my HDD and then burned it with perfectione......before I was trying to burn directly from my HDD to my cdrw instead of doing the write to my HDD and then the burn seperatly!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All is well now my friends.

Sheesh...now when I go to back up a game I have.....it says....cannot read from drive "x"(x represents the drive that had the game in it)......is it copy protecxted or something?

Get cdrwin and make sure you select ignore errors and it will burn it for you. Nero Burning Rom is also very good. Adaptec is the worst for backing up anything with protection.

hmmm have u OC the comp ??

that could be it

it ran my PCI bus @44mhz
and my scsi card did not like it

it would burn to 25-30% and then just stop

it is OCed,but everything is in spec except the agp card...and I doubt that is causing it...I think I am getting on the right track though......made another coaster...but it is a better coaster LMAO

Try burning at 4x and see if it inproves things http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif. And as mentioned previously a good defrag helps.

1.) If the orriginal cd is in a 20x or better drive, you should have DMA on.

2.) If your Hard drives are not in DMA and are over about 3gb, turn DMA on.

3.) Your cd burner is DMA compatable, so keep DMA on for all your drives. there is a reason it is there, to fill up those buffers better.

4.) Are you using 8x media?

5.) You could sell "coaster" sets!
