Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Newbie question - how to download lots of packets for RC5?

OK, I'm a bit of a newbie to this RC5 stuff - I run it on my work PC during the day, cos there's an open internet connection and the client doesn't interfere with what I want to do.

I have started to use RC5 for stability testing my home PC (500E @ 825). I am trying to drop the core voltage and see if she's stable, so RC5 is good for testing. However, I have a cr@ppy 56k modem and I have to pay for the calls (in the UK). Now the P3 825 knocks through 7 or 8 packets quite quickly - 2.4Mkeys/s.

What I would like to be able to do is download a shed load of work units, so I can leave the PC crunching for a couple of hours.

Sure, I could set my modem to connect automaticlly and disconnect if idle for 1 minute, which would be enough time to download 7 packets..... But I'd rather not pay for the calls!

Any help would be really appreciated.

Cheers http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Hello. That is a fairly easy thing to do. Open up the Distributed Det client and right click on it and select configure as you did when you set up your email address. Then select number 2 (buffer and buffer update options) and then change the settings for RC5 to a larger number. This has a different effect based on which version of the client you are running. On the newer clients this number specifies the number of work units you want to fetch or flush, but on the older clients it specifies the number of packets you want to fetch or flush. Packets usually contain approximately 3 to 4 work units but it varies. I think they limit the number of work units you can download to 2000 at a time but I am not positive on this. If you enter a number to large it will default to the maximum value. I hope this gets you going. You have signed up as a member of the Sysopt/Tweakit RC5 Team haven't you? If not go here and do so. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/rc5team.html

Cheers, Bdog!

Just changed the settings,as you suggested. I did a fetch and flush, but the input buffer was full, so I'll see what happens the next time it connects.

Err.. I'm not on the sysopt team... I think I'm on my own http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif Must get round to changing.

Apparently, I have a 1 in 220000 chance of cracking the code before anyone else http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

EDIT Hehe! I had my best day yesterday (up 4000 places)! Knocked a few blox out with the P3 825 http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

OK you talked me into it!

The celery 563 (yes, I overclocked* my work PC, as well http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif )I run at work can knock through ~1.4 Mkeys/sec, but I don't leave it on 24/7. Still, it chomps through ~150 blox / day.

I'll probably not submit much from home, as I don't have that on 24/7 either (pollution and electric bills are bad enough http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif ), but when I've tinkered with the system and want to run a stability test....

I'll see it I can get the client configured on Monday.

* Hehe... any excuse to overclock anything... I've overclocked my car and it's a diesel, apparently it can still accelerate at 120MPH...? Heck, I'd overclock my bicycle but I'd have to take anabolic steroids http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

That's a weird one, Sharpy - have you asked over on the OCing forum?? I know folk get upset when you post the same thread on several fora (is that the plural of forum ?). Praps you could ask Socalgal to shift the thread over there.

Dunno! You say you've tried a different CPU and mem, but still get slow results, which implies that there's something wrong with the mobo. Fore completeness, have you tried your son's K6-3 in your mobo to see whether it performs worse on your system...?

BTW: I don't know how accurate that will be 'cos don't the K6-3's have lots more L2 cache than the K6-2's?, so your son's CPU may be relying on it's internal cache and the K6-2's may rely on the cache on the mobo. I haven't really kept up to d8 with AMD, so I might be talking cr@p!!! But it's a possibility that the cache on the mobo is bust.

I guess you could try your K6-2 in your son's system and see if you get similar results, than you did B4 you tried to OC, but I think the OCing guys (and gals http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif )might have some more ideas.

Sounds to me I better hurry up getting my second and third system started.

I now only have an athlon 650 running at 1.95Mkeys/s

Soon my k6-2 450@575 will be cracking with it, and also my soon to own Cel2 566, gonna clock that baby ofcourse.

I should be able to catch up on some people, but I'll never make it in time!!!

I've only been running rc5 for 10 days now!!!

Started waayyyy to late!!!

Ahh well, every little bit helps!!!

I'll bet it will be a long time yet before it is over. So you will have plenty of time to catch up on people http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif.
