AuraEdge 05-27-1999, 04:58 PM The reason is ICQ99 chomps up ALOT of memory. If your running on a 32MB ram system, Ive noticed winamp and ICQ running at once (just these 2) can crash a system. This happened all the time on my P200MMX 32ram No I have a PII350 64ram and no problems whatsoever. Im almost sure its because of the ram. Eli 05-27-1999, 07:03 PM My PII 300 has only 32 megs ram, and I run ICQ 99a and Winamp together all the time without troubles. On top of that, I've run a few explorers, Getright, a virus program, a winmodem, and god knows what else is running. The only problem is Winamp cutting out when the modem is initialized or shut down, but I can live with that. Your P200MMX could have other problems... skywalker[TSG] 05-27-1999, 08:57 PM but hmm i have a P3 500 with 256mb ram why then does it act up on my comp socalgal 05-28-1999, 12:52 AM The 99a's (forget the build #s rite now) are an improvement over the 98. Sometimes experience slow sends but crashes much less. AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) is a real bugger tho. Have downloaded it 3 different times, including the Netscape version and it always disconnects several times during any session. Eli 05-28-1999, 12:58 AM 99a does that for me too, but it's still a lot more stable than 98a ever was. There was a new build released a few weeks back, which fixed some security bugs or something. The only downside to 99a that I've found is that it takes so much longer to load... StarWatcher 05-28-1999, 08:02 AM Huh, funny I have found AIM to be more stable with fewer connection problems than ICQ. One thing I do that probably helps, I put my own user name in my AIM buddy list-so it checks my connection every so often -helps to keep me online I think. socalgal 05-28-1999, 01:04 PM hmm thanks for that AIM suggestion StarWatcher. I will try it and see if that helps. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Do you also get "defective" smileys in AIM? [This message has been edited by socalgal (edited 05-28-99).] Mrcompjr1 05-30-1999, 01:42 AM personally i wouldn't even try to download AIM not worth the wasted time......have had better luck with icq 99a...and also on a very personal note...anything that has to do with aol sux....have had nothing but problems upon problems with it...i will stick with my netscape.......... AuraEdge 05-30-1999, 03:34 PM Hve ya ever been on AOL at a friends or sumthin. Once your on...(not too hard irf its not peek hours), Its a very different experience from reg internet. You can do tons of stuff u cant on plain connection. I mean the chatrooms and stuff are great...and not as techie as some of the others such aas mIRC and such (mIRC scared me away 2 years ago..i never went back). I still look forward to goin on AOL every so often at friends and stuff ta chat around...its fun. AOL will never control my home connection tho... And on another note...AIM aint bad at all...dont rat out free stuff. ALso ICQ sometimes doenst wanna connect u or kicks u from chats without tellin ya...Sides AOL people are usually to stubborn to get something else (namely ICQ) so your forced to hop on AIM to chat to em...thats the only reason i really use it..well i also use it when ICQ goes dead and cant connect but that hasnt happened to often latly Mrcompjr1 05-30-1999, 05:04 PM the only time i have seen aol's off peak hours is from 2am till about 5 am and during that time the only people to talk to are the cyber freaks. i've wasted alot of time explaining this fact to my aol "acquaintances".they are always whining about being kicked off all the time and want to know why i don't have the same problems.simple answer...i refuse to use aol.there problem solved. as far as chatting with people icq is the way to go for me. have never had a problem with it.in my opinion aol is a traffic jam waiting to happen and that is one street that i don't want to travel.as far as aol people being stubborn.....that is an understatement, but to each his own.i guess i will keep on troubleshooting the glitches for them, besides it is a good way to make a profit. as far as the problems with hardware, personally i don think that is the problem. i am running a P100 with 32meg ram and have not crashed it yet because of icq, a good possibility could be your net host "stalling" or something similar.
