I really don't want to go out and buy one of these things and would like to use my OLD 486DX for it. I dont want to run Windows or and big version of Linux. I want something that is really small and offers network support. I would imagine only one NIC would be needed for this. Is FREESCO any good? I know thats a router thing (dont need the router feature, already have one) but I heard you could also use that program for something like this. Someone give your repiles. Thanks.

You need to give a little more detail about what it is you're trying to do and why.

Most network attacted storage devices (Ie: Network Appliance) are EXTREMELY expensive. I'm talking upwards of tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars for a 60+gig device.

A minimal linux install should probably be cheapest and the best all around performer. A network card, some hard disks, NFS and if you want to get fancy, samba. That's really all you'd need.

Not sure a 486 would cut it though..

I'm looking for something really small that would run on a 486. Nothing really graphical just something to configure and supports file transfers. I really don't wanna pay a lot for a network storage device so I thought one of these would be good. Someone recommend a program.

Well, I'm not planning on using really big disks (about 5gigs) because I'm only going to use it to back up file systems. Nothing special.

You can forgo all the bells and wistles with linux.. infact, there is a custom router version made to fit on a single floppy disk.

What I'm not sure about is how good your performance will be on a 486 handling multiple file transfers over the network... or even if you can get (or how well) large disks working on a system that old.
