Hi everyone. I just got my own apartment and am seeking a fast internet connection. I would like something a little faster then just a 56k modem. If I get a cable modem will my normal phone line be able to support it? What about DSL. . . is it a hassel? One more thing, what are my options for a second phone line? I don't want to be cut off everytime the phone rings. Thank you.

Cable modem has nothing to do with the telephone line. it goes thru your cable tv line
Dsl is the one that uses telephone. if your teley lines are old it can cuase slow downs
for these services you have to call the cable company and telephone company to see if either of these support broadband internet

So if I got a cable modem, how exactly do I hook it up? Does it require a separate cable connection and if so, how much will it cost?

I would go with cable modem if you can get it. It cost about $48 bucks/mo. I have had both xDSL and cable and prefer cable over the two.

Josh42: you will need to call your local cable and phone company to see if they offer these services in your area. I live in New Albany, IN and they do not offer either of these services yet.
Another option is Satellite service. Yep, it uses a Direct TV style satellite thingy. http://directpc.com
Good luck and congrats on your new apartment.

Go to the follow sites and find the "Find Service", "Availability" or other similar link on the site:

Your local cable company, your local phone company.

Really depends on how many people are on your node and how much they use there connection with cable, and with an apartment, that number may be high. dsl on the other hand is dedicated. It may not make a big difference at all. If you dont have to sign a contract, you might consider testing them both for a month and finding out for yourself which is faster.
