it was 8 year ago that I bought my first
pc from circuit city it was a display item
600 for computer and 200 for 14' monitor
it had 2meg of ram, 512K vga onboard,
controller onboard, 2400 baud modem.
came with dos 5.0 and windows 3.1
packard bell 520st
386sx 20mhz
3 1/2 floppy drive
5 1/4 floppy drive
120 meg seagate
this is the first time that I took to learn about
dos and how to do thing on PC
I was using c64 and Amiga before that

I called BBS most of the time
and played online games, download some gif files. not much to do at the time.
then a few month later
i bought my first sound card it was
Sound FX 8bit soundblaster compatible from
circuit city again for 99.99
it was **** as the soundblaster16 was
a much better sound card but I think it
was like 199.99?

We have come along way haven't we
then a few more month
I bought 2 meg of ram for 79.95 from
software etc
giving it a total of 4meg
at the time I was playing dune II
and it was very good.
another year and I upgraded to
486 DX 40mhz it wasnt much faster thought
only 50percent faster and it didnt do much more I was disappointed having spend 600
buck on a ripoff shop.
he told me I had to get new vga card,
new controller, new cases. etc
and it just add up until 600
I think the board and cpu was 450 buck.
today we have much more powerful computer
and much cheaper too.
cpu and motherboard can cost as little
as 100 buck these day.
modem use to be what 200 for 14K?
now you can get 56K for 30buck for a very decent one.

We have come a long way people
and it just getting better oh did I mention
that Harddrive use to cost alot too
say 130meg for 130 dollar?
some thought it was cheap at that time
now is 20gig for 130?

My first PC that I BOUGHT was this past September, 17th. It was Dell 400mhz w/192 RAM for $1100 or so. Course I'm only 16 years old (15 at the time) http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif. Before that, I used my dad's 233 for 2 years, which is how I got into computers. I just hate sharing so I had to buy my own http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif.

Planning on selling the current "budget" system this July and getting a POWER SYSTEM!!! Just love that title. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Current computer just wasn't good enough for my needs.

Thanks for the thread Gene C. -- I missed that one. But how come no body's mentioned my first love -- the Atari 1040ST? That was the first 1 meg RAM pc -- made the front cover of BYTE magazine. Had NO hard drive, ran everything off a 1.44 floppy (that's when everyone else was using those really floppy 5 1/2" things). All this was before Windows. The Atari had its own GUI.

What really amazes me still is that although, of course, the graphics were pretty basic, games like Silent Service played great off a 1.44 floppy and 1 meg of RAM -- heart pounding, sweaty palms game play. Much better game play than later versions of SS (and a lot of today's games). Boy, I still can remember the bow shot on an Akakazi! Aaahhh, those were the days, children.
